Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

(SIOUX FALLS, SD) – For a textbook example of the good that the Northern League can serve a player, see RHP Shayn Holbrook. A non-drafted, inexperienced free agent, the Canaries brought him to Sioux Falls a season ago for a shot to get his career on track. Now, after a standout 2003 campaign, Holbrook has re-upped with the Birds for 2004, the club announced today.

Last year, in just his second professional season, the Roseville, CA native became one of the brightest spots in a strong Canaries bullpen, going 5-3 with a 3.05 ERA over 32 appearances. Opposing batters hit just 222 against Holbrook, as he surrendered only 45 hits in 56 innings of work.

Holbrook pitched even better at the hitter-friendly Birdcage, going 3-2 with two saves and a 2.60 ERA in home games. He proved virtually untouchable down the stretch, compiling a 1.23 ERA in 12 outings in August, permitting just seven hits in 14 innings over that time.

"Our bullpen is shaping up to be very strong once again," Canaries manager Doc Edwards said. "With Holbrook, Lincoln Mincks, and (the newly acquired) Derrick Lopez, that is an extremely strong trio to work with."

The 6-foot, 3-inch, 220 pound Holbrook made his professional debut in 2002, splitting time between Yuba-Sutter and Sonoma County of the independent Western League.

The Canaries kick off the 2004 season on May 20 at the Birdcage against the visiting St. Paul Saints. Great tickets packages are now on sale and can be ordered by calling (605) 333-0179.
