Can History Repeat Itself

February 3, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, February 3, 2009 - Riding a two-game winning streak, the Portland LumberJax return home to host the San Jose Stealth at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 7th at the Rose Garden Arena. This is the first of three regular season meetings between the two clubs and the first of two at the Rose Garden.

Last Saturday, the Jax (3-3) beat the expansion Boston Blazers 9-8 in overtime in Boston. With the win, Portland reached the .500 mark for the first time since the team was 2-2 during the 2007 season. The Jax also wrapped up the month of January with a .500 record for the first time since 2006.

Trailing 8-6 late in the fourth quarter, the Jax quick strike offense tied the game and pushed it into overtime. Forward Derek Malawsky scored with 4:05 left in regulation and then forward Peter Jacobs scored 15 seconds later to tie the game.

In overtime, forward Peter Morgan buried the game winner one minute, 13 seconds into the extra quarter to give Portland the hard fought, 9-8 victory.

Goalie Matt Disher once again anchored the Jax defense, stopping 46 of the 54 shots he faced. The National Lacrosse League's saves leader with 254 saves, Disher has made at least 32 saves in every game this season.

While a new month brings new challenges, forwards P. Morgan and Cory Conway were not happy to see January end. P. Morgan finished the month with 12 goals and three assists. P. Moran's 12 goals were the most goals scored in a single month during his Portland career.

Conway finished the month with 10 goals and 17 assists to lead the team with 27 points. The second-year forward scored two goals or more in three of the six games and scored at least two points in every game he appeared.

The Stealth (2-3) are coming off a 16-6 thrashing of the Edmonton Rush. In the win, forward Cam Sedgwick scored a season-high six points (4 goals, 2 assists) and forward Colin Doyle scored one goal and added three assists.

Overall, 10 different players scored for San Jose as it won its second game of the season and second by 10 goals.

The 2006 Jax finished January at .500 and went on to win the West Division and then host the franchise's only home playoff game. The 2008 Jax just finished January at .500. Could it be Déjà vu all over again?
