Can-Am Roundup - August 7

August 7, 2013 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Newark 3, New Jersey 2

Newark may have only scored three runs against a tough Jackals pitching staff, but the Bears made the most of their opportunities. The Bears scored a couple of quick runs in the second inning and followed that up with an Ernie Banks, Jr. home run in the fourth. Thanks to a trio of strong pitching performances, that was all Newark needed for a 3-2 win.

The Bears scored both of their second-inning runs during the same at-bat. With Joseph Poletsky at the plate, Newark had runners on the corners with nobody out. After Wander Nunez stole second base, a passed ball allowed Banks to score from third base and moved Nunez up to third. Poletsky drilled a double to plate Nunez and the Bears took a 2-0 lead. Two innings later, Banks' homer made it 3-0.

Adam Gabel faltered just once in five innings for the Bears. The left-hander's only mistake resulted in a two-run home run by Jeremy Barnes in the fifth inning. Otherwise, Gabel kept the Jackals' offense in check, allowing Sergio Espinosa and Jorge Vasquez to finish the final four frames. Espinosa pitched three perfect innings and Vasquez allowed just one hit in the ninth en route to his 14th save.
