Newark jumped on the Jackals early, took a break, then exploded again in the latter innings to capture an 11-2 win. New Jersey struggled on defense with four errors and the Bears, to their credit, made the road team pay.
The Bears started their onslaught in the second inning by taking advantage of a pair of New Jersey errors. A Sean O'Hare double plus an outfield error equaled two runs for the Bears. Later in the frame, a passed ball brought O'Hare home. The following inning, Mike Gedman singled home a run before another error allowed Newark to expand its lead to 5-0.
New Jersey cut down on its deficit with a Cody Johnson two-run homer in the fourth, but Newark starting pitcher Adam Gabel made sure that was all the runs the Jackals would manage. Gabel's six innings yielded just those two runs on seven hits and the Bears provided their starter with some insurance after he exited the game.
Newark tacked on a run in the seventh, then added five more runs in the eighth. After three consecutive one-out walks loaded the bases, Jonny Kaplan singled home Joseph Poletsky. Jamar Walton followed with a sacrifice fly and Newark scored three more in the inning on a bases-loaded walk by Kyle Lafrenz and a two-run single by Wander Nunez. The five-run frame gave Newark a nine-run lead, helping Gabel earn his second win. Wander Alvino pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his first save.
