July 8, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
New Jersey 4, Quebec 0
The Capitales had a chance to clinch the first half of the season Friday, but they will have to wait at least one more night. Jackals RF Leonard Davis took a first-inning Karl Gelinas pitch deep to give his club a 2-0 lead out of the gate, and New Jersey never looked back. Davis, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, later scored the final run of the game on a Nick Giarraputo third-inning single. Leading the whole way, Jackals starting pitcher James Leverton put it in cruise control, striking out 12 Quebec batters and allowing only four hits and one walk in eight innings of shutout work. With the win, Leverton's sixth of the year, the hurler's ERA dropped to 2.12 on the season.
Pittsfield 2, Newark 1 (In progress -Top 9)
Colonials 1B Angel Molina never reached first base Friday night against the Bears. But that didn't stop the Puerto Rico native from driving in the only two Pittsfield runs of the night in the Colonials' 2-1 win over Newark. Molina had three groundouts - one a double play in the sixth frame. But two of those ground balls were placed just right, allowing CF Jerod Edmondson and 2B Danny Bomback to cross home plate, breaking 0-0 and 1-1 ties, respectively. Bomback and Bears 2B Juan Martinez each went 2-for-4 on the night, the only players with more than one hit in the contest. Though he allowed just one run in six innings of work with seven strikeouts, Colonials starting pitcher Miguel A. Flores didn't factor in the decision. The win instead went to reliever Mike Zenko, who allowed just one hit in two innings of work and struck out two.
