Published on January 24, 2005 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Durham, NCâ The Can-Am League announced today that it has admitted Worcester, MA as the eighth city for the 2005 season. After more than seventy years of waiting, professional baseball has returned to Worcester.
"We are extremely excited about adding Worcester. It is a big step forward for the Can-Am League," stated league commissioner Miles Wolff.
The team will play at historic Fitton Field on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross. The field is named after Father Fitton, who purchased the land on which the school was founded and deeded it to Bishop Fenwick in 1843. There is much work to be done within a very compressed time frame, but we are focused on being ready for Opening Day in May, 2005."
The ownership group, headed by Alan Stone and Phil Rosenfield, has begun to build its first-rate baseball organization, and is will soon make announcements regarding its field manager, general manager and other positions.
More information about the organization can be found on the team's new web site, www.worcesterprobaseball.com. The site also gives fans a chance to get involved in the team immediately with a "Name Your Team" contest.
