Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Derek Campbell unloaded two home runs including a grand slam on Monday, as the Threshers held on for an 11-9 victory over the Tampa Yankees at Bright House Field.
The Threshers (28-15) have won four straight and moved back into first place in the FSL North after Dunedin's 9-7 loss at Daytona. With 27 games remaining, Clearwater is a half game up on the Blue Jays and two ahead of Daytona in the second-half division race.
Campbell pounded out his third multi-home run game of the season, shooting a solo homer in the fourth, and belting a grand slam in the fifth for a career-high five RBI performance.
The five RBIs matched a single-game best for a Thresher this year, and his grand slam was the second for Clearwater this season. Mitch Walding accomplished both on April 15 at Jupiter.
Clearwater broke out the bats early against Tampa starter Nestor Cortes (2-1), jumping ahead with two runs in the second inning.
Zach Green singled through the left side to start the frame, and Kyle Martin struck a double to right-center to score Green with the night's first run. Malquin Canelo then worked a full count and singled to left to push home Martin.
Clearwater kept it going in the third, after Josh Tobias was hit by a pitch and Tocci doubled to put two men in scoring position. Aaron Brown then struck a line-drive, three-run home run to the berm in right to open a 5-0 lead.
Brown finished 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBIs, and two runs scored in his return to the Threshers, after the outfielder was activated from Reading's disabled list and assigned to Clearwater on Monday.
Campbell's first home run of the night made it 6-0 in the fourth inning, and Clearwater opened it up with five more off reliever Jose Mesa, Jr. in the fifth.
With the bases full and one down, Canelo singled through the left side to score Brown. Campbell then stepped up and scorched a grand slam to left to launch the Threshers to an 11-0 advantage.
John Richy held Tampa scoreless on four hits before the Yankees managed a pair in the sixth inning. Richy (4-4) would give the Threshers six innings, permitting two runs on six hits and a walk while matching a season-high with six strikeouts.
Tampa (23-20) made it a ballgame in the seventh.
The Yankees plated seven runs on eight hits against the Threshers bullpen, sending 12 to the plate and placing the tying run on first before Ulises Joaquin got Wes Wilson to pop out to second to end the inning.
Joaquin quieted things down with a perfect eighth, and Matt Hockenberry took it home to earn his fourth save.
The Threshers will look for a series win on Tuesday, with Will Morris (7-2) on the hill against James Reeves (5-1). First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com and the TuneIn app beginning at 6:45 p.m.
