Camden Finishes Sweep of Newark with 10-5 Win

NEWARK, NJ, July 4-The Camden Riversharks scored five runs in the 3rd inning en-route to a 10-5 victory over the Newark Bears Friday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, Camden (38-21) completed a three-game sweep of their series with Newark (29-30).

Right-hander Ben Simon (8-2) pitched 8 innings for Camden, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits. With the victory he is now tied with teammate Kevin Dougherty for the most wins in the Atlantic League with eight.

Tom Stepka (5-5) started for the Bears and lasted only three innings, his shortest starting stint of the season. Stepka allowed 5 runs on 6 hits. In the third inning he allowed four run-scoring hits with two outs in the inning.

Al Hawkins came on in relief for Newark and saved the bullpen by tossing the final six innings of the game. He allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits.

Camden was led offensively by Alex Eckleman, who was 3-6 with a double and 2 runs-batted-in in the game. Designated hitter Nate Vopata also contributed three hits to the attack. Shortstop Jesus Azuaje was 2-3 with 2 doubles, and RBI and 3 runs scored, while teammate Brad Strauss drove in 3 runs with a 2-4 outing.

Michael Coleman (2-4, RBI) hit a solo home run, his 9th of the season, in the eighth inning. Bears teammate Danny Clyburn was 3-4 with an RBI.

The Bears will travel to Atlantic City for a four-game series, which begins tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Surf. Jaime Navarro (3-1) and Calvin Maduro (0-0) will pitch for the Bears.
