Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT - July 25th - One night after they matched their opponent stride for stride, the Bridgeport Bluefish dropped a 15-7 decision to the Camden Riversharks in front of 3,041 fans at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The loss drops the Bluefish to 9-5 in the second half and 42-42 overall in 2008.
Bluefish starter Rafael Bergstrom (5-6) struggled early giving up four runs in the first two innings, but settled down until a rough sixth inning where the Rivershark offense exploded. Camden's L.J. Biernbaum and Ron Davenport led the Southern New Jersey squad, both going four-for-five on the night and totaling six RBIs. Biernbaum blew the game wide open in the sixth launching a grand slam off Bluefish reliever Wes Wilkerson, part of a nine-run inning for the 'Sharks. Kevin Walker (1-0) received the win pitching three strong innings in relief for the Riversharks, allowing one unearned run while striking out two.
The Bluefish scattered seven runs on 13 hits knocking out Camden's starter Julio Guerrero after the fourth inning. Of the 13 hits, the lone extra base hit was centerfielder Henry Mateo's double in the bottom of the third. Bridgeport's second basemen Jay Caligiuri continued his great second half, going two-for-four with two RBIs. Ryan Bear, Wilson Batista and Brian Munhall both added two hits in the losing effort. Bergstrom absorbed the loss, charged with nine runs over 5.1 innings. Ryan DiPietro, Franklin Perez and Steve Doetsch also took the mound in an attempt to tame the Riversharks' offense allowing only one run over the final three innings of work.
The Bluefish look to bounce back against their Liberty Division foes and remain in first place. 2008 Atlantic League All-Star Barry Hertzler (4-6) takes the mound for Bridgeport against Camden's Kevin Mannix (1-4) in a 6:05 P.M. start. Every Saturday home game all season long features a post-game fireworks extravaganza!
