Lancaster got leadoff homers in each of the first two innings and seven singles in the eighth to defeat the Newark Bears, 8-2, in front of 6,912 Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Mike Woods took Benito Baez (4-4) onto the picnic deck in right field for an immediate 1-0 Lancaster lead that was never overcome by the Bears. Manny Mejia crushed his eighth homer of the season to left to lead off the second inning as the Barnstormers stretched the edge to 2-0.

Newark closed to within a run in the third. Vic Gutierrez led off with a single to center against Jason Scobie (1-0) and went to second when a pickoff throw skipped past Ian Bladergroen. Scobie retired the next two hitters without Gutierrez advancing, but Jose Herrera picked up the run with a triple to left center field.

Scobie and Baez pitched scoreless ball from then until the bottom of the sixth. Juan Francia drew a one-out walk and took third on a single to left center by Danny Gonzalez. Matt LeCroy grounded a single off the glove of shortstop Ramon Castro for an RBI single and a 3-1 lead.

Newark again could not quite overtake Lancaster. With one out in the seventh, Ramon Nivar lined a single into left center. Gutierrez found the hole on the left side for another hit, chasing Scobie. Castro greeted Ramon Castro for a third straight hit, loading the bases, and Keith Reed brought a run across with a force play grounder to third. Ryan Cullen was summoned to face the lefty-batting Herrera Herrera looked to surprise the Lancaster infield by laying down a bunt, but dropped it in front of the plate and was gunned down by Mejia.

The Barnstormers put it away with the barrage of singles in the eighth. Gonzalez, LeCroy and Mejia singled off J.J. Trujillo for one run, and Lloyd Turner sacrificed. Ian Bladergroen hit a pop up behind second base with the infielders pulled in, and the ball dropped when Gutierrez and Castro impeded each other. Jutt Hileman and Jordan Herr lined consecutive bases loaded singles for a 6-2 lead. A sacrifice fly by Woods made it 7-2, and Francia capped the scoring with an RBI single off the tip of Gutierrez' glove.

Cullen retired all seven batters he faced for his fifth save of the season.
