Mohegan Wolves News Release
NEW LONDON, C.T. (April 16th, 2002)- With the Mohegan Wolves about to embark on the first road trip in franchise history, the trip may come too soon for starting Quarterback Cable Davis. Its not that Cable isn't excited to venture out of the friendly confines of the remarkable Mohegan Sun Arena, its just that Davis is just now finally recovered from his cross country jaunt that brought him to Connecticut, from Yakima, Washington.
Cable Davis's expedition from high school to the Mohegan Wolves is littered with stops all over the continental United States. Since graduating from Elk Grove High School in Elk Grove, California, Cable has had stops in Mississippi, Missouri, Washington and he has finally found a home in New London, Connecticut.
Davis attended Butte Community College in Butte, California after an outstanding high school career at Elk Grove High. In two seasons Cable passed for over 4,800 yards and 47 touchdowns for Butte CC. He guided the team to a record of 18-4, 2 bowl games and one league title. He was named team Most Valuable Player both seasons and accepted a scholarship to play at Southern Mississippi University; the same school that produced NFL All Pro Quarterback Brett Favre. After red shirting in 1998 Cable entered his junior season with hopes of leading the Golden Eagles but lost out to freshman Jeff Kelly, who went on to start for four seasons under center for Southern Miss. Cable saw limited action that season and made the decision to transfer to Central Missouri State, a Division II school in Warrensburg, Missouri. Davis decided that he would rather transfer down to a D-II school rather than sit out another year to play at the Division I level. After his senior season with the Mules of Central Missouri State, Cable seemed to fall off the map.
Though he attended various workouts for the NFL, AFL and a variety of other professional football leagues, he wasn't able to secure a position. However, after taking a year off he finally signed with the Yakima Shockwave of the National Indoor Football League. His stay in Yakima would be short lived though, when the team held a meeting and all the players were notified that the franchise was folding. With that news, Cable was looking for a place to play, and the Wolves were looking for a Quarterback.
-cont'd- So Davis packed up his belongings, and his fiancée Heather and made the 3000-mile trip to Connecticut.
"I was hoping that Cable was as good as he looked on film, because I would have hated to send him back to California after driving that many miles," said Head Coach Gary Porter. "Cable has turned out to be better than he was on film, we couldn't be any happier with his performance. He is going to be a great Arena Football quarterback," Porter added. Cable Davis Game By Game Stats Comp. Att. Yards TD Int. vs. Albany Conquest 15 31 191 2 2 vs. Norfolk Nighthawks 19 31 211 4 2
Where Cable Davis will end up next season remains to be seen, but he sure has come a long way thus far.
Davis and the Mohegan Wolves will travel to Rochester, New York this weekend to take on the 1-1 Rochester Brigade. It is the beginning of a three game road trip, which has the Wolves facing the New Haven Ninjas (0-2) on April 27th, and the Norfolk Nighthawks (0-2) on May 4th. The Wolves will return home on May 10th to host the Albany Conquest (2-0). For ticket information visit www.tickets.com
