Butler and Sanders earn player of the week honors

Boise, ID (February 28, 2005) — The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Great Lakes Storm center Jackie Butler was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, while Dakota Wizards guard Melvin Sanders was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for the week of February 20 – 26.

Butler earned his second player of the week award this season after posting 25.3 points and 12.7 rebounds per game as he led the Storm to a 2-1 record in three games played last week. He also added 3.7 assists and 2.0 blocked shots per game, while shooting 46.0 percent (29 of 63) from the floor and 75.0 percent (18 of 24) from the free-throw line. In a 116-103 (6-1) victory over the Gary Steelheads on February 22, Butler posted 33 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots. The next night he added 28 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots against the Rockford Lightning. He then added a season-high seven assists on February 25 against the Yakima Sun Kings.

On the season, Butler ranks 10th in scoring at 18.0 points per game, 3rd in rebounding with 10.7 per game, and 3rd in blocked shots with 1.5 per contest.

Dakota Wizards guard Melvin Sanders earned his first weekly honor of the season after he posted 33.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game as Dakota finished the week with a 4-0 record. He also added 4.0 assists and 3.8 steals per game, while shooting 61.0 percent (44 of 72) from the floor, 86.0 percent (30 of 35) from the free-throw line, and 61.0 percent (14 of 23) from behind the three-point line. In a 119-116 (5-2) victory over Yakima on February 23, Sanders posted 31 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Two nights later he posted 41 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 106-100 (6-1) victory over Gary. The 41 points matched the second-highest scoring output in the CBA this season.

Sanders leads the Wizards in scoring and ranks 14th in the league at 17.3 points per game.

Other players receiving consideration were Gary's David Graves (23.0 ppg, 8.6 rpg), Rockford's Marshall Phillips (19.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg), Idaho's Sam Clancy (21.0 ppg, 10.7 rpg), and Sioux Falls' Jerome Beasley (25.0 ppg, 12.3 rpg).
