Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, Ohio (August 6, 2010) - Courtney Bures punched a single in to left field to give the Akron Racers a 1-0 win over the Chicago Bandits in the first of a three-game set at Firestone Stadium this evening.
Following six and a half scoreless innings, Sharonda McDonald led off with a single to second and then advanced to second on a Vicky Galindo throwing error. Kelley Montalvo dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance her to third before Mackenzie Vandergeest was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners, setting the stage for Akron's walk off victory. Bures then stepped to the plate and singled to left to give Akron the 1-0 victory.
Both pitchers worked well however it was Lisa Norris (13-3) who came away with the complete game shutout victory. She worked seven complete frames and surrendered just five hits and struck out two to register her 13th win this season. Kristina Thorson (8-4) was saddled with the tough-luck loss, working 6.1 innings, she gave up one run on seven hits while striking out seven.
Each team had opportunities to score early but stellar defense and baserunning blunders kept the game tied. Chicago wasted a golden opportunity in the sixth when Amber Patton led off with a triple to right. An out later, Samantha Findlay picked up a walk and then pinch runner Amber Waits stole second to put runners at second a third. Norris made quick work of the next two batters, getting a foul out at third and pop up to second to end the inning and Bandit threat.
Juarez, McDonald and Vandergeest each finished with two hits apiece for Akron while Stacy May was 2-for-3 to lead the Bandits.
The three-game set continues tomorrow (Saturday, August 7) at 7:05 p.m. where the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Jackie Pasquerella bobblehead giveaway! For more information or tickets, visit www.akronracers.org or call 330-376-8188.
