Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Bulls offense kept on rolling as they pounded out 11 hits including four home runs on their way to a 9-1 rout of Gwinnett on Monday. Aneury Rodriguez went seven shutout innings allowing one hit and earned a win for the second consecutive start, while Joe Dillon and Alvin Colina combined to go 7-for-7 with two home runs and five RBI to pace the offense.
Durham struck quickly in the first inning, as Fernando Perez singled to center and Elliot Johnson walked to start the inning. Dan Johnson brought home his 15th RBI with a sacrifice fly, and Dillon followed with an RBI-single to make the score 2-0. Chris Richard followed with a towering blast into the Diamond View seats in right field, capping off a four-run first for the Bulls.
Justin Ruggiano led off the third inning with a homer, his third in as many games to make the score 5-0. Dillon struck again one batter later, blasting a solo homer off the Bull in left field. It was Dillon's first home run of the season, and gives him 12 RBI for the season.
Colina added a three-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a high fastball from Cristhian Martinez and depositing it over the Blue Monster in left-center field. The four home runs were the most by the Bulls in one game this season, and improves their league lead in homers with 23.
With 11 hits on the day, Durham also extended their league lead in batting average, hitting a remarkable .299 as a team over 18 games this season. That number is 20 points higher than second place Columbus coming into action Sunday afternoon. The Bulls lead the league in every offensive category except triples, as they improve to 14-4 on the season.
The offensive outburst was more than enough for Aneury Rodriguez, who cruised his was through 7.0 innings on only 97 pitches, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four. Since earning a promotion from Double-A Montgomery, Rodriguez has not allowed an earned run in 14 innings pitched, allowing just five hits during that span.
Dale Thayer came on to work the final two innings for the Bulls, allowing a run in the ninth inning before closing the door.
The Bulls and Braves finish their series tomorrow with an 11:05 a.m. game at the DBAP. RHP Heath Rollins (0-1, 3.86) makes his first start of the season for the Bulls after five appearances out of the bullpen. He will take on RHP Ryne Reynoso (0-3, 6.60) for the G-Braves.
