Bulls Fall in Shootout to IceRays 4-3

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls ran into a hot goaltender on Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.

Bulls' players fired 51 shots on goal but it wasn't enough as they dropped a 4-3 decision in a shootout to the Corpus Christi IceRays. It was Amarillo's sixth loss in either overtime or a shootout, but the Bulls were still able to gain a point and maintain a slim lead on the Texas Tornado for first in the South Division. Amarillo still leads the NAHL overall standings by also one point over the Austin Bruins.

TJ Sarcona, John Rey and Ryan Cole scored for the Bulls in the second period where all of the scoring was done in regulation.

"I take full responsibility for this game as a coach," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "I failed to get them mentally prepared to play tonight, and it won't happen again."

The first period saw the Amarillo Bulls dominate but unable to get on the scoreboard. The Bulls had 16 first period shots and 12 of them were quality scoring chances.

It was a wild second period that featured six goals with four of them coming via the power play. The IceRays jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the first eight minutes of the stanza. The Bulls worked hard to tie the contest. TJ Sarcona scored on the power play from Omar Mullan and Geoff Fortman. About six minutes later, Ryan Cole scored from Gage Christianson. The IceRays re-collected a 3-2 lead with their second power play goal, but the Bulls battled back to tie it again. Captain John Rey's shot eluded Ben Myers from Blake Roubos and Gage Christianson. The Bulls outshot Corpus Christi 18-10.

The third period was dominated by the Bulls as they fired 17 shots on goaltender Ben Myers who stopped everything that was headed his way. Matt Sieckhaus and TJ Sarcona were robbed by Myers on terrific opportunities in front of the net.

There was no scoring in overtime and the teams headed into the shootout where either team had been able to notch a victory. The IceRays scored three goals, while the Bulls were able to get just one in the shootout.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Corpus Christi IceRays 52-23. Each team was 2 for 5 on the powerplay.

It's back on the road next weekend for the Amarillo Bulls with a pair of games on Friday and Saturday in Topeka against the RoadRunners.
