Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls closed out their exhibition series on a positive note on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
Two goals from defenseman Connor Frey sparked the Bulls past the Wichita Falls Wildcats 5-2 in a feisty, chippy affair that featured plenty of special team play and fights.
Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said it was nice to get a win before heading up to Blaine, Minnesota and the NAHL Showcase.
"We definitely brought a different team out," said Williams after the game. "We competed hard just not very smart. If we play this way all year, we are not going to win many hockey games. I was disappointed. There is a difference between tough hard-nose hockey that's whistle to whistle then the hacking and whacking and altercations after-the-whistle stuff. There is no need for that."
The Bulls had eight of its second year players in the line-up and that seem to be the tonic they needed to dominate the first period with two goals and 16 shots.
James LaDouce scored on a blast from the point just over four minutes into the hockey game, and then Ryan Cole followed that up almost 10 minutes later.
In the second period the Bulls killed off two five-minute major penalties. Connor Frey skated in from his defense position to tip the puck into the net.
The Bulls offense added two more goals in the third period. Frey notched his second of the game with a slap shot from the point, and then Rich Marenis fired a shot that beat the Wildcats' goaltender stick side. Wichita Falls scored two power play goals in the final seven minutes to round out the scoring.
The regular season for the Amarillo Bulls gets underway on Wednesday at the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota. The Bulls will take on the Austin Bruins at 1:45 pm at the Schwann Super Rink. Fans can tune into the game live on ESPN1440 and www.amarillobulls.com, beginning with the Bulls Warm Up Show at 1:30 pm. Denis J. Puska will have the play-by-play call to follow. The game is also available on Pay-Per-View courtesy of Fast Hockey and a high speed internet connection is required in order to view the game.
