Amarillo Bulls News Release
WICHITA FALLS, TX - The Amarillo Bulls comeback effort was stopped by the Wichita Falls Wildcats 5-4 in a shootout on Wednesday night at Kay Yeager Coliseum.
The Bulls were able to collect a point moved into a tie for second place in the NAHL's South Division, but are placed ahead of the Texas Tornado in the standings because of one more victory.
At one point in the second period, the Wildcats had opened up a 4-1 lead, but the Bulls didn't quit and rallied with two in the second period and then the equalizer in the third. Dan Sherer's backhand shot squirted through the pads of goaltender Tyler Green with less than four minutes remaining in the third period.
Nikifor Szczerba started the game for Amarillo but was replaced in the second period by Greg Gruehl after the Wildcats netted their fourth goal. Szczerba came back into the game to face the Wildcats in the shootout where the home team scored twice and the Bulls failed to notch one.
It wasn't a good start to the game for the Bulls as they gave up a couple of special teams goals and fell behind 2-0. One goal came via the power play and the other was shorthanded. The Bulls got on the board when Eric Millisor's shot off the face-off was tipped home by TJ Sarcona at 14:38 and it reduced the Wildcats lead to one.
The Wichita Falls Wildcats added two more goals in the second period to extend their advantage to 4-1. However, then it was time for the comeback to start as two goals inside of five minutes had the Bulls charging and seeing red and reduced the Wildcats lead to 4-3. Dan Sherer tallied on a delayed penalty with a backhand shot under the cross bar, and then TJ Sarcona notched his second unassisted at 19:05. The Bulls put tremendous pressure in the Wildcats zone in the final minute but couldn't get the equalizer.
