Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls ran into a hot goaltender on Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
TJ Black stopped all 34 shots he faced as the Bulls were blanked by the Lone Star Brahmas 2-0. The Bulls three game winning streak was halted, but their South Division lead remained in-tacked at 11 points after the Topeka RoadRunners lost in Rio Grande Valley. However, the overall lead the Bulls enjoyed has been reduced to two points after Fairbanks settled for a shootout win over the Corpus Christi IceRays.
Black kept the Bulls players off the score sheet with some big saves, including several in the second period. It's Black and Lone Star's third victory over the Amarillo Bulls this season and first in the Texas Panhandle. The two teams meet again in two weeks back at the Budweiser Bull Pen.
The Brahmas took the play to the Bulls in the first half of the game and then played tight defensive hockey over the final 25 plus minutes once they secured the lead preventing the home side from mounting any comeback bid.
It was a tough opening period for the Amarillo Bulls as they found themselves behind 2-0. The visiting Brahmas netted the first goal on a shot from the high slot early in the first period. The Bulls kept pressing in front of goaltender TJ Black but were unsuccessful. The Brahmas took a 2-0 advantage converting a scramble in front of the net. The Bulls outshot the Brahmas 12-10 in the first period.
The Amarillo Bulls had a better second period firing 12 shots on goal but unable to push it past goaltender TJ Black who made some outstanding stops to keep the Brahmas in front. The combination of Mike Davis and Roman Ammirato made a great play to keep the puck in at the blueline. The two worked the puck towards the front of the net but their chance at the front of the net was denied by Black who got piece of the puck.
The third period saw the Bulls push forward looking to get on the scoreboard and delight the big crowd. Defenseman Patrick Pollock and forward Tyler Gernhofer, who combined for nine shots in the contest, had their pucks stopped by Black.
The shots on goal favored the Amarillo Bulls 34-18. The Bulls also had five power play opportunities in the game, while the Brahmas had three.
