Bulls Blank New Mexico 3-0

Amarillo Bulls News Release

RIO RANCHO, NMX - The Amarillo Bulls posted their third win in a row, and pulled to within two points of the second place Texas Tornado in the South Division with a 3-0 victory over the New Mexico Mustangs on Thursday night at the Santa Anta Star Center.

It was the Bulls 29th win of the season and seventh against the Mustangs this season. Goaltender Nikifor Szczerba stopped all 25 shots he faced and his teammates limited the New Mexico scoring chances.

The Bulls held a 1-0 lead entering the third period, but two goals five minutes apart put the game out of reach. Dan Sherer notched his second of the game on a great shot from Matt Johnson and Zack Smoot. The play was set up by defenseman Dan McDougall as he prevented New Mexico from heading down the ice on a long stretch pass. Zack Smoot rounded out the scoring from Johnson and Sherer at 17:19. Johnson finished the game with three assists, while Smoot and Sherer each had three points.

The game started 15 minutes late due to bus problems by the Bulls that forced the team to depart Amarillo behind schedule. It didn't seem to bother the Bulls as they came out and took the play to the New Mexico Mustangs. Amarillo notched the game's first goal when Dan Sherer completed a 2 on 1 break from Matt Johnson at the 12:08 mark. The Bulls outshot the Mustangs 12-8.

There was no scoring in the second period but the Bulls dominated most of the play forcing the Mustangs to turn over the puck numerous times inside their own zone. Amarillo outshot New Mexico 16-8.

Each team had four power play opportunities but no goals were scored.

The Amarillo Bulls now begin a two game home stand tonight (Friday) at The Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center when they host the Corpus Christi IceRays at 7 pm. Fans are invited to come out early and enjoy drink specials from 6 pm to puck drop.

It's part of a busy weekend for the Bulls at home that concludes on Saturday with the second game against the IceRays. The Bulls will wear their Make-A-Wish Jerseys and an auction of those specialty jerseys follows immediately after the game. Everyone is invited to attend.

Tickets for the two games are available at all Panhandle Ticket Outlets, including United Supermarkets Civic Center Box Office or online at www.amarillobulls.com. For further information regarding group tickets, flex packs or to purchase single game tickets, please call the Bulls Office at 806-242-1122.
