Amarillo Bulls News Release

TOPEKA, KS - You couldn't have asked for a better New Years gift for the Amarillo Bulls as they closed out 2010 with a bang. The Bulls posted their 21st win of the season nipping the Topeka RoadRunners 3-2 on New Years' Eve at the Kansas Expo Center-Landon Arena.

It was an outstanding defensive effort by the Bulls as they limited the RoadRunners to very few quality scoring opportunities. What chances Topeka had were turned away by goaltender Nikifor Szczerba.

The Bulls had a 3-1 lead entering the final 20 minutes and had to deal with a 15 minute delay when the lights went out in the arena. However, the club was able to deal with the adversity well and controlled much of the play when it resumed. Topeka scored to narrow the deficit to 3-2 but couldn't get any closer.

It didn't take long for the Bulls to get on the scoreboard as Colton Warner's shot found the back of the net with just 1:04 played in the game. Derek Hills earned an assist on the goal. The Bulls extended their lead when Dan Sherer scored on the powerplay from Colton Warner at 9:01.

Topeka closed out the scoring with a goal at 15:24. The RoadRunners lost the services of their top forward Michael Hill who was ejected from the game for a crosscheck on Bulls captain Derek Hills. The tall defenseman didn't return the rest of the game.

The Bulls had an extended power play on the major penalty to start the second period but failed to score. It was a see-saw period with both teams trading momentum. Amarillo added its third goal in the final two minutes of the period when Zack Smoot deflected home a shot from Matt Johnson.

These two rivals will play again on Saturday night back at the Kansas Expo Center-Landon Arena at 7 pm. Fans can tune into the action on ESPN1440 and www.amarillobulls.com fueled by Sportsjuice, beginning with The Bulls Warm Up Show Presented by Wayland Baptist University at 6:45 pm.
