Bulls Beat IceRays 5-1

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The Amarillo Bulls netted four first period goal and went on to defeat the Corpus Christi IceRays 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at the American Bank Center. The victory propelled the Bulls back into sole possession of second place in the NAHL's South Division. It was also the Bulls 32nd win of the season and 16 on the road.

The Bulls special teams capitalized in the contest with two power play goals on six attempts and one shorthanded. Amarillo also capitalized on IceRays goaltender Phoenix Copley who didn't play well and was pulled from the game after the fifth goal was score.d

The Amarillo Bulls offense ignited for four goals in the opening 20 minutes and could have easily had a lot more. After the IceRays scored the game's first goal on the power play, the Bulls offense went to work. First Cody Freeman tallied via the power play from Michael Erickson and Dan McDougall. Mitch Rogge gave the Bulls a 2-1 lead with a hard wrist shot at the 7:22 mark form Joe Kozlak. The Bulls were not done yet as Dan McDougall scored near the side of the net from Alex Weise who got his first point as member of the team. Weise wasn't done yet as he scored his first goal in a red uniform from Matt Johnson at 17:29. The Bulls had the shots on goal advantage 14-9 in the first period.

In the second period, the Bulls added to their lead when Matt Johnson jammed home the puck at the side of the net on the power play from Zack Smoot at 54 seconds. That goal chased goaltender Phoenix Copely and he was replaced by Mason Murovich. The IceRays took over some of the momentum in the second period thanks to several power plays but Nikifor Szczerba held the lead in check with some key saves.

The Amarillo Bulls and the Corpus Christi IceRays will meet again tomorrow (Sunday) night at 7 pm at American Bank Center. It's the rescheduled game from Saturday night.
