Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - For the first time in five years when they hoisted the oldest trophy in USA Hockey, the Amarillo Bulls are headed back to the Robertson Cup.
Two goals in the first period and another three in the second powered the Bulls past the Shreveport Mudbugs 6-0 in the fifth and deciding game of the South Division Championship Series. It's the Bulls fourth South Division Championship but first in five years. The victory on home ice marked the most significant win by an Amarillo team at home at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo Hockey History's 23 years.
It was a complete performance from start to finish by the Bulls who came out firing on all cylinders and had the Shreveport Mudbugs in retreat mode for most of the night. Rocky Russo's charges got timely goals by a variety of players, and terrific help defense by blocking shots on a regular basis.
The Bulls will head to Blaine, Minnesota and face the Aberdeen Wings on Friday in game one of the National Semi-Final Series at Fogarty Ice Arena at 7:30 pm. The second game takes place on Saturday, also at 7:30 pm, and if a third and deciding game is necessary it would be played on Sunday at 6 pm. The National Championship game is next Tuesday also at 7 pm. The other national semi-final features the Johnstown Tomhawks and the Fairbanks IceDogs.
In the Texas Panhandle on Sunday night, Gabriel Seger scored just 54 seconds into the game and that was later followed up by Jason Brancheau to make it 2-0 after the first period. The Bulls opened things up in the second with three more as Jordan Venogoni, Alex Peterson and Logan Jenuwine found the back of the net. In the third period, Jason Brancheau scored his second of the game, shorthanded into an empty net. Jake Willets and Cooper Fensterstock each had two assists.
Justin Evenson notched the win in goal stopping all 29 shots he faced. He has allowed just one goal in the last 120 minutes of hockey.
Broadcast coverage of the Robertson Cup National Semi-Final series begins on Friday night at 7 pm with Prelude To The Robertson Cup Presented by Fit Omni on 107.1 Nash Icon, www.amarillobulls.com/listen and on PPV with Hockey TV. The puck drop follows at 7:30 pm.
