Bucs Add Three Familiar Names
January 13, 2010 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release
LAKE CHARLES, LA (January 13, 2010) - Even though former Head Coach Darnell Lee decided to venture out to the west coast, new Head Coach Shadrick McAfee is bringing back some familiar names to the Louisiana Swashbucklers as they come into the 2010 season as the defending champions of the Southern Indoor Football League.
With a winning tradition that consists of three consecutive championship titles, the Bucs have re-signed Quarterback Alvin Bartie, Wide Receiver Sammy Knight and former Lake Charles Land Sharks receiver Jermaine Martin.
A two-year starter, Alvin Bartie (6'2 220, Hines CC) returns under center after leading the club to back-to-back titles and one undefeated season. In 2009, Bartie led the Bucs to the top in many offensive categories including top scoring offense (53.9 pts/game) and total offense (233 yds/game). Finishing with 32 touchdowns and a passer rating of 94.07, Alvin was a top the SIFL in individual total offense averaging 6.1 yards/play.
Jermaine "The Flea" Martin (5'7 160, McNeese State) returns to the Swashbucklers after spending last season with the Acadiana Mudbugs. Once a fixture in the Lake Charles area, Martin spent the 2005 and 2006 season with the Bucs and was once a member of the Lake Charles Land Sharks (03-04). In his four-year run with the two Lake Charles organizations, "The Flea" amassed 57 total touchdowns and earned All-Star nods for his play in 2004. A graduate of McNeese State, Jermaine still ranks as the Cowboys all-time leading receiver.
Also returning is another two-year starter in wide receiver Sammy Knight (5'9 185, Santa Monica CC). After accumulating 2,573 total yards combined in 2008 and 09, Knights' return means that the Bucs will have their leading all-purpose yardage man back. In those two seasons, Sammy also reeled in 100 receptions and 29 touchdowns while also serving as a defensive back gathering 16.5 tackles (14 solo) and one interception last season.
"Means a lot to have three all-star caliber players who know and understand our offense that has led us to a large amount of success in the past," says Bucs Head Coach Shadrick McAfee. "Their veteran leadership in the locker-room also helps spend practice time on much needed other areas which also gives them the opportunity to help teach the new guys we bring in."
