Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas - The Laredo Bucks blew a two goal lead in the third period and fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Corpus Christi Rayz on Tuesday night in front of 5,228 fans on Valentine's Day at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Forward Derrick McIver scored at 19:59 of the third period, after 1.9 seconds had been put back on the clock in the last 11.5 seconds of regulation, to tie the game and send it to overtime and stun the Bucks. Laredo is 31-12-4 with a Southeast Division and Southern Conference best 66 points. The Bucks are in Odessa on Friday, and then travel to Amarillo on Saturday and Austin on Sunday. The Bucks wasted no time jumping on a struggling Corpus Christi squad. Forward Chris Grenville snapped home a wrist shot from the left slot just 2:17 into the game for a 1-0 lead. It was his team leading 20th of the season. Just 1:23 later it was forward James Hiebert redirecting forward Brent Cullaton's shot for a power play goal. It was the 16th for Hiebert. The Bucks dominated the first period of play, but were unable to add to their lead. Laredo held the Rayz with out a shot for the first 11:52 of the game. The Rayz in fact crept closer as forward Josh Miskovich tipped home a shot by defenseman Tim Laurila at 15:42 to cut the gap to 2-1 after one period.
In the second period the Bucks got some help. Forward Steve Simoes tipped a shot that was stopped by Rayz goalie Scott Reid, but Reid pulled the puck into his own net trying to cover the rebound at 6:35 to make it 3-1. It was the 12th of the season for Simoes. The Bucks played well defensively as they didn't allow Corpus Christi a shot for the first 14:20 of the second period.
In the third the Rayz closed the gap on a power play chance. Forward Chris Robertson put in a rebound at 13:39 to make it a one goal game. The Rayz were two for their last 80 on the power play coming into the game. Late in the game the Rayz pulled the goalie looking for the tying goal. With the extra attacker on for Corpus Christi, Laredo forward Jeff Bes was called for cross checking at 19:12. Just four seconds later defenseman Phillippe Lauze was hit with a high sticking call putting the Rayz on a six on three advantage. After a scramble in front the clock was stopped with 10.8 seconds to go. The referee put seven tenths of a second back on the clock to move it to 11.5 seconds left. After another scramble ended with 3.1 seconds left, the referee again added time to the clock, putting 1.2 seconds back on and moving the clock to 4.3 seconds. The 1.9 seconds total that were added proved to be critical because the Rayz were able to win the draw and slide the puck backdoor where forward Derek McIver fanned it across the goal line just before the horn sounded to tie the game at 19:59 of the third period.
The game went to overtime and the Rayz were on the power play to start sudden death. Corpus had several early chances, but couldn't score to win the game. Late in overtime Bucks captain Brent Cullaton got loose on a breakaway chance, but chipped the puck just wide on the backhand attempt. Cullaton chased down the puck behind the net and fed it in front to cutting defenseman Adam Rivet who fired it off the post with just seconds left in overtime.
The game headed to a shootout. Forward Ryan Carter scored on the first Rayz shootout attempt to give them the lead. The Rayz carried the 1-0 lead to the fifth round of the shootout where Bucks forward Ladislav Kouba tied it with a goal to send the shootout to sudden death. In the ninth round forward Matt Holmes scored to give the Rayz the lead. The Bucks had a chance to tie it, but forward Nick Warriner was denied by Rayz goalie Scott Reid. FINAL SCORE Corpus Christi 4, Laredo 3 in shootout.
David Lemanowicz stopped 27 of 30 shots and seven of nine in the shootout, but took the loss to fall to 13-3-2. Reid turned aside 28 of 31 shots, then eight of nine in the shootout to get the win and improve to 12-14-1. The Bucks were 1-3 on the power play, while Corpus Christi went 2-5.
