LAREDO, Texas â The 2004 CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks signed their first player of the off season. The Bucks inked defenseman Steven Makway to a contract for the upcoming 2004-05 CHL regular season. The Bucks are currently taking deposits for new season tickets. Makway, who is 6'4" 225 pounds, hails from Trail, British Columbia. He spent last year with the Battlefords' North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Makway had 11 goals and 44 points in 36 games and totaled 208 PIMs.
"He is a talented young man," said Laredo Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "He played on a Memorial Cup championship team in Kootenay. He is a very physical player who puts up good offensive numbers."
The Memorial Cup is the championship of Canadian Major Junior hockey and is determined by a post-season tournament that matches the champions of the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League in a round robin format. Makway played on the 2001-2002 WHL Kootenay Ice team that captured the championship.
"That was a long road to win the Memorial Cup," said Makway. "We came together as a team at the right time. I was happy to be a piece of the puzzle and help out."
Makway, who also spent time with the Tri City Americans of the WHL, hopes to help the Bucks continue their winning tradition.
"It feels good to sign in Texas with such a good team and organization," said Makway. "To go to a winning team like the Bucks that captured a championship is great. I just want to help the team keep it going next year."
