LAREDO, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks were stymied as Rio Grande Valley Killers Bees' goalie Jeff Van Nynatten made 58 saves in a 4-3 victory over the Bucks at the LEC in Game One of the best of seven first round CHL playoff series. Laredo, the top seed in the Southern Conference, mustered a franchise record 61 shots in a losing effort. Game Two of the first round of the CHL playoffs presented by Westwind Homes is Saturday at the LEC against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The Killer Bees quickly took the lead as Laredo turned the puck over in their own end and forward Dennis Maxwell centered to wide open forward Matt Reynolds who squeezed a shot five hole at 1:08. The Bucks came back to tie the game on a power play chance. Forward Leo Thomas managed to jam the puck over the line after a wild goal mouth scramble at 4:12 for his first of the post-season.
In the second period the Bucks took the lead as forward Steve Simoes one-timed home a drop pass from the high slot on a three-on-two rush at 2:42. Rio Grande Valley responded as forward David Masse took a centering pass all alone in front, put on a great fake, then scored on the backhander at 5:09. The Killer Bees took the lead 3-2 as forward Marlon Joseph put in a rebound at 11:35. Rio Grande Valley extended their lead when forward Rob Carrigan fired a screened wrist shot high stick side at 16:13 for a 4-2 advantage.
Laredo got back in the game in the third period as forward Jeff Bes lifted in a wrist shot high glove side at 10:21. The Bucks put on furious pressure in the third, pumping 24 shots on net, but Van Nynatten withstood the onslaught. FINAL SCORE Rio Grande Valley 4, Laredo 3.
Kevin Reiter allowed four goals on 25 shots in 59 minutes and fell to 0-1. Van Nynatten faced a barrage of 61 shots as he got the win and is 1-0. The Bucks were 1-10 on the power play, while Rio Grande Valley was 1-6. Laredo out shot the Killer Bees 61-25.
