LAREDO, Texas - On Tuesday the 2006 CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks announced the signing of forward Don Melnyk. Melnyk spent this past season with the OCN Blizzard in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He is the second player signed by the Bucks this off season. The 5'10" 180 pound Melnyk played the last four seasons with OCN. He scored a career high 39 goals in 60 games during the 2005-06 season with the Blizzard and totaled 96 points. OCN went 37-17-5 in the regular season.
"He is my type of player," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "Don is gritty and feisty. He works hard and has the ability to score goals. He is the type of guy you want on your team, because other teams don't like playing against him."
In the 2006 MJHL playoffs the 20-year old Melnyk added nine goals and 18 assists in 16 games as he helped OCN reach the MJHL Finals.
"I am excited and looking forward to the challenge," said Melnyk. "I have heard good things about Laredo from a former OCN teammate."
Melnyk, who is from The Pas, Manitoba, played with former Buck Aaron Starr during the 2002-03 MJHL season with OCN. The Blizzard captured the MJHL championship in 2003.
In four season with OCN Melnyk had 77 goals, 209 points and 653 PIMs in 190 games.
