Laredo Bucks News Release

LAREDO, Texas – The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks beat the Austin Ice Bats 5-4 on a late goal by defenseman Dion Hyman in front of 5,345 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center on Wednesday night. The Bucks improved to 24-22-2 with 50 points and are now just five points out of the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference with two games in hand on Southeast division leading Corpus Christi. Laredo is home on Friday against the Amarillo Gorillas. Face off set for 7:30 p.m. For Laredo Bucks season or single game tickets call (956)-718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com and buy tickets online.

The Bucks got on the scoreboard first. Forward Steve Simoes picked up the puck on the right wall, skated to the slot and scored on a wrist shot high glove side at 4:11. It was the ninth of the year for Simoes. The Ice Bats tied the game when forward Kris Knoblauch made a nice move down the left side and snapped home a wrist shot at 7:23. The Bucks came back later in the period and retook the lead. Forward Adam Paiement skated down the left side, cut to the slot then dropped the puck to cutting defenseman Paul Elliott who blasted it into the net at 14:34 for a 2-1 Laredo lead. It was the third of the year for Elliott.

In the second period the Bucks extended their lead. Austin tried to clear the zone, but forward Lou Dickenson knocked the puck down then fed it backdoor across for Paiement who slammed it into the net at 7:04. It was the 19th of the year for Paiement. The Bucks were hit with an unsportsmanlike penalty immediately after the goal and Austin wasted no time capitalizing. Just 20 seconds later forward Gerald Tallaire got the Ice Bats within 3-2 with a wrist shot at 7:24.

Late in a physical second period the Bucks once again got in penalty trouble. Forward Scott Kelman was hit with a hooking penalty, and then Bucks forward Lou Dickenson was whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty at the same time. On a five-on-three power play chance the Ice Bats once again capitalized as forward Jared Dumba popped in the loose puck at 14:18 to tie the game at three goals apiece. The Bucks then drew a power play chance of their own as Dickenson was hauled down in the Austin zone. The Bucks wasted no scoring as forward Mark Wires grabbed a loose puck in front and slammed it in for a 4-3 Laredo lead at 17:46. It was the fifth of the season for Wires. Continuing the penalty trend of the period Austin forward Tom Kotsopoulos was hit with an unsportsmanlike call at the same time as the goal was scored.

In the third period the Bucks had to dig deep to survive an Austin rally. At 10:45 the Ice Bats tied the game when defenseman Jeff Alcombrack scored a bizarre goal on a shot from the red line. The Bucks refused to wilt as they pressured in the Austin end. With less than five minutes to go Bucks forward Jeff Bes hit the post. After Austin cleared the puck Laredo re-entered the zone. Bes moved the puck across to the right circle for defenseman Dion Hyman who scored on a wrist shot high glove side at 15:44 to give the Bucks their fourth lead of the game at 5-4. The Bucks then survived the final moments and held on for the win. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Austin 4.

David Guerrera stopped 16 of 20 shots to get the win and improve to 11-12-1. Matt Barnes allowed five goals on 39 shots and took the loss to fall to 20-13-3. The Bucks were 1-2 on the power play, while Austin was 2-5.
