Brumbaugh Blasts His Way Back Into Lineup as Caps Win 5-2

August 31, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - Cliff Brumbaugh returned to the Edmonton Capitals in a huge way on Tuesday night, blasting a pair of solo home runs to lead his team past the Victoria Seals 5-2 and start the final homestand of the 2010 regular season.

The heavy-hitting first baseman hadn't played since Aug. 17 versus the Tucson Toros, as he returned home to be with his wife for the birth of their third son. And did he ever make his presence known upon his return, cranking two homers over the left field wall. The longballs were his 20th and 21st of the year, as he leads the Golden Baseball League.

"I'm glad to be back ... this is such a great team," Brumbaugh said of his first game back that saw him go 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. "It was so good to go home and be there for the birth of my son, and now I'm refreshed and ready to finish the year with the Caps."

Starting pitcher Alex Francisco was also a stud for the Caps on Tuesday with both his arm and his bat. He picked up the win by throwing six innings and giving up just two runs on six hits while striking out five, and he also helped his own cause with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning.

With the win, the Caps improved to 19-20 in the GBL's second half, and kept their slim playoff hopes alive. They still have a chance to catch Calgary (25-14) for first in the North. They could also get in as a wildcard if the first-half champion Chico Outlaws (21-17) overtake Calgary and win the second half as well, but only if they have a better overall record than Calgary. The Caps are currently one game behind the Vipers in the overall standings.

The final two regular season games at TELUS Field remain on Wednesday and Thursday night, both starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday's game is the final SONiC Wiener Wednesday of the regular season, as all Capital Dogs are just $2. And it's also Shirt Off Our Backs Night, as 18 fans will go home with a game-worn, autographed Caps jersey if their purchased raffle ticket is selected. All the proceeds from raffle ticket sales will go to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.
