Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - UCLA remained unbeaten and Oklahoma ran its winning streak to 10 games on the second day of action in the Fifth Annual Whataburger College Classic Saturday.
Sophomore Trevor Bauer became the second UCLA pitcher this tournament to strike out 15 batters as he led the Bruins to a 5-2 victory over Mississippi State. Bauer (3-0) fanned seven in his first run through the Bulldog lineup and notched his 15th strikeout in the eighth inning. He topped his previous career best of 13 strikeouts, set earlier this season against Bethune-Cookman.
Bauer equaled the performance of last night's starter for UCLA, Gerrit Cole, who rung up 15 strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Bauer carried a two-hit shutout into the ninth. For the night, Bauer allowed two earned runs on three hits and a pair of walks in eight innings plus two batters.
The Bruins (12-0) carried a 5-0 lead into the ninth, thanks in large part to a four-run outburst in the sixth. Two Bulldog errors, a hit batter and a walk set the table for junior right fielder Brett Krill, who hammered a single to left with the bases loaded, plating two for a 3-0 UCLA lead. Later in the frame, a wild pitch and a fielder's choice RBI for sophomore third baseman Dean Espy brought in two more runs for a 5-0 score.
The Bulldogs (9-5) gave the blue and gold a bit of a scare in the ninth. Senior left fielder Luke Adkins opened the inning with a walk and stole second. Junior right fielder Ryan Collins, who entered the game in the eighth as a defensive replacement, doubled to right, sending Adkins home and spoiling Bauer's shutout bid.
Bauer was lifted in favor of sophomore reliever Dan Klein, who retired Connor Powers on a grounder to short before giving up Jet Butler's RBI single to right. Klein set down two of the next three batters to preserve the win.
Powers, MSU's senior first baseman, entered the game with 30 RBIs in 13 games. He did not drive in a run Saturday night, but he did get two hits, including a fourth-inning double - the only blemish on Bauer's record through the fifth.
Saturday afternoon, Garrett Buechele knocked in three and starter Bobby Shore tossed seven innings of one-run ball as Oklahoma cruised past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 11-2. The Sooners (15-1) have scored in double figures six times this year and have outscored their opponents 27-7 in two days at Whataburger Field.
Oklahoma snapped a 1-all tie with a four-run top half of the fourth. The Sooners took advantage of five walks issued by the Islanders. Chris Ellison provided an RBI single and Ross Hubbard brought in another run with a double. Buechele, a sophomore third baseman from Arlington, Texas, knocked in a pair of runs with a single. Buechele went 3-for-5, his 12th multi-hit game this year, raising his average to.468.
Sophomore first baseman Cameron Seitzer had the only homer in the game, a solo blast in the second to pull the Sooners level at 1-1. Seitzer is 4-for-6 in the tournament with six RBIs, while Hubbard is 3-for-7 with five RBIs.
Shore (3-0) allowed a run in the first, then blanked the Islanders over the next six frames. He was touched for six hits and a walk while striking out five, and at one point retired 17 of 19.
Trey Hernandez and Bobby Buckner picked up RBIs for the Islanders (7-6), who committed three errors and issued nine walks.
Saturday's crowd of 4,122 is a new single-day record attendance figure in the five-year history of the Whataburger College Classic.
Sunday's final day of action pits the two unbeatens, No. 15 UCLA and No. 25 Oklahoma, at 11:00 a.m. The Islanders and Bulldogs mix it up at 3:00 p.m. in the opener of a doubleheader.
