Austin Bruins News Release
Blaine, MN- The Austin Bruins Inaugural season is officially underway. The Bruins traveled to Blaine Minnesota today to play its first game against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs as part of the 8th annual North American hockey league showcase. It's the first time Austin Minnesota has had a junior hockey team since 1985, when the Austin Mavericks occupied Riverside Arena. The first game was a tall task between the Ice Dogs who advanced all the way to the Robertson Cup Finals last season. Nick Drill a native of Madison Wisconsin added the first goal in Austin Bruins history.
The Bruins got off to a quick start as Jeremy Finger, the Orlando Florida native proved that he can fight as he sparred of against Joe Blake gaining the momentum for the Bruins. The Bruins entered the third period up 3 to 1, but Fairbanks turned it on in the third with two unanswered goals. The game went to overtime knotted up at 3 apiece. When the game went to a shootout Paul Prescott went upstairs to end the game in the shootout. The Bruins won their first game ever against one of the best teams the North American Hockey League has to offer. Head Coach Chris Tok says "The guys competed hard and found a way to get the two points!"
The Bruins take on the North Division champions from last season the Traverse City North Stars at 1:45. The home opener is on October 2nd against division rivals the Owatonna Express.
