Laredo Broncos News Release
June 26, 2009-Laredo, TX-the Laredo Broncos tried to rally late, but came up short as they lost to the Amarillo Dillas by a score of 6-3 at Veterans Field.
The Dillas struck first in the game in the top of the 3rd inning. Justin Wenger and Willie James led of the inning with back to back singles. Keanon Smith then delivered a rbi single scoring Wenger and moving James to 2nd. Andrew Wrong then hit what looked like a double play ball, but the Broncos' shortstop Jaime Morales' throw after the force out went wide of the 1st baseman. That allowed James to score and Wong to advance to 2nd. That gave Amarillo the early 2-0 lead.
The Broncos were held in check by Dillas' starter Ralph Roberts thru the first 3 innings. However, the Broncos finally put together a threat in the 4th inning. OJ Garza and Mario Mendez had singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd with only 1 away. But, Roberts was able to get out of the jam and keep his 2 run lead.
Amarillo tacked on a run in the top of the 5th inning. With 2 outs and a runner on 2nd, Terrance McClain hit a high fly ball to left fielder David Cardona. Cardona dropped the routine fly ball and the runner on 2nd Andrew Wong scored. That made the score 3-0.
The Broncos caught a break in the 7th inning when Amarillo's starter Ralph Roberts who had held the Broncos to no runs on 4 hits, left the game with an apparent injury. Miguel Ortiz would greet new pitcher Andy Noonan rudely with a lead off single. Then with 1 out, pinch hitter Luis Ugueto doubled putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Jaime Morales grounded out, but scoring on the play was Bennett, which made the score 3-1.
The Dillas added to their lead in the 8th inning. Trent Lockwood hit a solo home run, his 5th of the season, making the score 4-1.
Tano Tijerina ended his night after 8 strong innings of work. He gave up 4 runs 3 of which were earned on 6 hits. He walked only 2 and struck out 6. Tristan Crawford came into the game and gave up 2 unearned runs in the 9th, as the Broncos trailed by 5 heading into their last at bat.
Dillas closer Robbie Wooley came into the game despite it not being a save situation in the bottom of the 9th. Miguel Ortiz singled to start the inning and then after 1 out Jake Wells singled moving Ortiz to 2nd. Jaime Morales then hit another single, which loaded the bases. With 2 outs, OJ Garza hit a 2 run double scoring both Ortiz and Wells. However, Robert Moron flied out to end the game as the Broncos fell by a score of 6-3.
