Broncos Pick Up Tenth Win of Season with 9-6 Victory in Finale Against Thunder

June 21st, ROBSTOWN, TX - RHP Santo Hernandez was looking for a bounce back start after he only went two innings in his last outing, he squared off against RHP Carlos Rangel of the Thunder.

Hernandez got into trouble right off the bat, he walked Ron Fenwick and then Levy Ventura crushed a ball into deep left center field for a two run homer and a 2-0 Thunder lead after one full inning.

The Broncos cut the lead in the top of the second. Luany Sanchez singled and moved to second on wild pitch. Ryan Flynn then singled Sanchez home to make the score 2-1 Thunder.

Hernandez faced only three batters in the bottom of the second, but in the bottom of the third was burned again by Levy Ventura. Ventura hit home run number six on the season and his second of the day to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead.

Thunder starter Carlos Rangel was hit by a pitch in the leg by Jason Diaz and could not continue past the third inning. LHP Doug Brandt, who picked up his first win of the season against the Broncos in game two of this series, came on in relief.

The Thunder defense would show holes in the top of the fifth. David Fowler reached on a bunt single, after a Flynn strikeout, Wolgamot walked and Diaz walked to load the bases. Nick Mahin hit a SAC fly to make the score 3-2 Thunder. Kenny Gilbert then reached on an error that allowed a run to score to tie the game at 3-3. Thennis then reached on an error that loaded the bases again. Gabe Memmert was hit by a pitch that brought home the go ahead run for the 4-3 Bronco lead.

Two extra base hits by the Thunder in the bottom of the sixth plated a run to tie the game at 4-4.

The Broncos re-took the lead in the top of the seventh. Thennis reached on a fielder's choice, and with two out Steve Bralver pinch hit for Gabe Memmert. Bralver lined an RBI double down the right field line to give the Broncos the 5-4 lead.

Hernandez came back out for the seventh inning. The Thunder loaded the bases with one out against Hernandez but he was able to dance out of the jam by striking out Brian Nichols and getting Alex Fernandez to fly out to preserve the 5-4 Bronco lead.

In the top of the eighth the Thunder defense disappeared again. After a Fowler strike out Flynn reached on an error by Gonzalez, Wolgamot hit an infield single, and then Diaz knocked in Flynn with an RBI single to make the score 6-4 Broncos. Mahin walked, Gilbert was hit by a pitch to bring in another run and make the score 7-4 Broncos. Later in the inning with two out Steve Bralver came through again with an RBI single to make the score 8-4 Broncos. On the play there was a throwing error by the catcher Butler that allowed Mahin to come home and give the Broncos a 9-4 Lead.

Matt Gibbs started the eighth for the Broncos, he allowed two hits and a run to score while retiring two hitters. The score was 9-5 Broncos and manager Dan Firova went to the bullpen. Franklyn Gracesqui came in and allowed another run to score before shutting the door on the Thunder.

In the bottom of the ninth with the score 9-6 Broncos and Gracesqui still on the mound the Thunder went down 1-2-3 and the Broncos picked up their tenth victory of the season.

The Broncos have an off day tomorrow before welcoming in the Amarillo Dillas in for a four game series at Veterans Field.
