Broncos Have Big 11th Inning in 14-9 Victory Over WhiteWings

Harlingen, TX-The Laredo Broncos capped off a back and forth battle with a 5 run 11th inning to defeat the Harlingen WhiteWings at Harlingen Field by a score of 14-9 on Sunday Night. The Broncos continue on this short 3 game road trip with the finale of a 3 game series on Monday night. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

The WhiteWings would get on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the 1st inning. Bub Bergstrom led off the inning with a single. He would advance to 2nd base on a sacrifice bunt by David Fowler. The next batter Brian Nichols singled scoring Bergstrom from 2nd. Ryan Fox would then walk moving Nichols to 2nd base. During Argelis Nunez's at bat, a passed ball allowed the runners to move up to 2nd and 3rd base. Nunez would then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Nichols and making the score 2-0.

The Broncos would strike back in the top of the 3rd inning. Anthony Bennett led off the inning with a single and went to 2nd on a walk to Eric Padilla. Arnoldo Ponce would hit into a 4-6-3 double play to quickly make 2 outs, but Anthony Bennett went to 3rd. Dwayne White would then come up and single scoring Bennett. Edgard Clemente would follow with a single and then Luany Sanchez walked to load the bases. Ivan Reyes would then knock in a run when he was hit by a pitch. The next batter Ben Tinius would deliver with a 2 run single scoring Clemente and Sanchez, and giving Laredo a 4-2 lead.

Harlingen would come back in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Bub Bergstrom would lead off with a single and then steal 2nd base. Then with one out Brian Nichols would hit a 2 run home run, his 8th of the season. That would tie the score at 4 after 3 innings.

The WhiteWings looked like they might threaten in the 5th inning. Bub Bergstrom was on first base with 2 outs, when Brian Nichols lined a shot into centerfield. Dwayne White laid out and made a spectacular diving catch to end the threat and keep the score tied at 4.

That would be the day for Broncos starter Dan Sausville. Sausville went 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. He walked 1 batter and struck out 4.

Harlingen would take the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning off of reliever Justin Staatz. Ryan Fox walked to lead off the inning. Then Argelis Nunez hit a 2 run homer, his 5th of the season to give the WhiteWings a 6-4 lead.

The Broncos would get one of those runs back in the 7th inning. Dwayne White led off the inning with a double and would go to third on a wild pitch by reliever Juan Jimenez. Then with 2 outs Ivan Reyes would double scoring White and cutting the lead to 1, by a score of 6-5.

Laredo would then break through in the 8th inning against Harlingen reliever Brian Daly. Santiago Guerrero led off the inning reaching base on an error by 3rd baseman Ryan Fox. Anthony Bennett then tried to sacrifice bunt Guerrero to 2nd but Daly tried to get the out at 2nd and threw it into centerfield allowing Guerrero to reach 3rd base. Eric Padilla would then hit an infield single scoring Guerrero and advancing Bennett to 2nd. Then Matt Lawman hit a sacrifice bunt moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Dwayne White would then walk to load the bases. Edgard Clemente then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bennett and moving Padilla to 3rd. Luany Sanchez would then single scoring Padilla and moving White to 3rd. Ivan Reyes would then reach base on the 2nd error of the inning by Daly allowing White to score and giving the Broncos a 9-6 lead.

Justin Staatz would then leave the game for the Broncos for reliever Rusty Jones. Jones would give up 2 straight singles to Brian Nichols and Ryan Fox. Then Argelis Nunez came up and reached base on an error by Eric Padilla to load the bases. David Wasylak would then come into the game to replace Rusty Jones. On the first pitch he threw Wasylak got Terry Roblez to hit into the 4-6-3 double play. Scoring on the play was Nichols and advancing to 3rd was Fox. David Cardona would then single scoring Fox. The next batter Carl Johnson would single moving Cardona to 3rd. But Wasylak, would get Amadeo Zazueto to ground out to end the inning and keeping the Broncos leading the game 9-8 heading into the 9th inning.

The Broncos would be held scoreless in the top of the 9th inning and Benny Cepeda would come into the game looking for the save. Cepeda would walk Bub Bergstrom to start off the inning. Bergstrom would then go 2nd on a sacrifice bunt. Brian Nichols would then hit a bloop single moving Bergstrom to 3rd. Then Ryan Fox would hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bergstrom, tying the game at 9 and sending the game to extra innings.

Laredo would threaten in the top of the 11th inning. Dwayne White led off the inning with a double off of reliever Caleb Balbuena. Then Edgard Clemente would walk. Luany Sanchez would then single, but Dwayne White was called out after the ball hit him. Ivan Reyes would then walk loading the bases with only 1 out. But, Ben Tinius would hit into a 5-3 double play to end the threat.

The WhiteWings would do nothing in their half of the 10th and we went to the 11th tied at 9.

The Broncos then blew the game open in the top of the 11th inning. Santiago Guerrero was hit by a pitch to start off the inning. Then Anthony Bennett got a bunt single moving Guerrero to 2nd base. Eric Padilla would then hit a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Matt Lawman would then give Laredo the lead when his sacrifice fly scored Guerrero and advanced Bennett to 3rd. Then Dwayne White would hit an rbi single scoring Bennett. Edgard Clemente would then hit a routine ground ball that went through the 2nd baseman's legs allowing Clemente to be safe and moving White to 3rd. That would be a huge error as the very next batter Luany Sanchez would crush a 3 run homer, his 7th of the season. That would give the Broncos a 14-9 lead going to the bottom of the 11th.

John Smith would come into the game and hold Harlingen scoreless as the Broncos took the middle game of the series by a score of 14-9.

The Broncos scored 14 runs on 16 hits and committed 1 error, while the WhiteWings scored 9 runs on 12 hits and committed 4 errors.

The Broncos now improve to 16-15 on the season. The Broncos will be back in action on Monday night in Harlingen for the 3rd game of a 3 game series with the WhiteWings at 7:05.
