Broken run ends Frenzy's game
November 21, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Cape Cod Frenzy News Release
Philadelphia, PA â A thunderous slam and a broken spring short-circuited the Boston Frenzy's second game of the 2004-05 season with 10:18 left in the fourth quarter. After cutting the lead to ten late in the third, the Frenzy trailed 97-81 when a Philadelphia dunk broke the rim's support spring, suspending the game.
"The league still has to make a decision on how to proceed," said Head Coach Joe "Jellybean" Bryant. "But there was more than enough time for us to come back. I think we'll finish the game soon."
Troy Brown and Q Randall led a surge in the third quarter when Bryant said his team "woke up and started playing defense." Brown finished with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Randall had 8 and 9.
"We're still learning what it takes to win games," said Bryant. "We would come down and run something that worked. Then the next time down, we'd run something different. We can't do that. If something's working we've got to milk the cow. That's the pro game."
The Frenzy finished their two game road trip at 0-1 with a 94-87 loss Friday night at Harlem and the suspended game against Philadelphia Saturday night. But despite the poor performance on the scoreboard, Bryant thinks there's light at the end of the tunnel.
"I think we're going to mature as the season goes on. Even last year in Las Vegas, we started the season with four straight losses, but then we got on a roll and won six or seven in a row. Guys just figured out how to win."
Part of the reason for Bryant's optimism is the coming addition of AND1 supertalents John Humphrey (Helicopter), Dennis Chism (Spyda), and Lonnie Harrell (Prime Objective).
"We've got a really diverse team in the type of units we put out there, and those three guys will slip into this roster perfectly," Bryant said.
The trip to Philadelphia was extra special for Coach Bryant and Q Randall. Bryant grew up, played college, and pro basketball in Philadelphia. He still keeps a home there and spent Saturday night with friends and family after the game. For Q Randall a trip to Philly meant a reunion with cousins and family members he hadn't seen since he was a toddler. "I'm sure I'll have plenty of people in the stands," Randall expected. "It's just exciting for basketball to give me the opportunity to go out and play in front of them."
The Frenzy return to practice on Monday, November 22nd and open their home schedule Friday, November 26th at 7 p.m.
Extra quotes:
I feel good. We're a great rebounding team, we just can't finish right now. We have such a diverse bunch of units, we can use the big unit to get fouls, the small unit to create havoc, we have to understand the uses of our players. We also need guys to be leaders, talk on defense, be a professional.
It was just special, and we might not see each other again for like two or three years, but when you see each other it's like hey, how are ya? You've got to respect basketball in that way.
