Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - On Sunday afternoon, the Lewiston MAINEiacs were down, but they certainly weren't out. The MAINEiacs fell behind twice to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, before tying the score with 48 seconds remaining, and ultimately winning on Etienne Brodeur's goal at the 3:20 mark of overtime. Lewiston's 3-2 win was their eighth in a row, and it came in front of 1,706 excited fans at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
Baie-Comeau got the scoring started on an interesting goal at the very end of the first period. With the Drakkar shorthanded, Jean-Philippe Caron let a wrist shot go from the right circle. The puck found the back of the net, but the question remained whether or not time had expired. After video review, the goal counted, as 0.2 seconds were left on the clock.
The score stayed that way until the early stages of the third period, when the MAINEiacs took advantage of their eighth power play of the day. Michael Chaput received a pass from Matt Bissonnette along the goal line, cut to the right circle, and beat Alexandre Alain-Rajotte high over his glove.
Later in the period, the Drakkar benefited from another awkward goal, as they retook the lead. Danick Malouin took a shot from the top of the right circle that would have gone wide. Unfortunately, Olivier Dame-Malka's stick made contact with the puck, dribbling it in past a helpless Antoine Bibeau.
However, Lewiston wasn't about to let Baie-Comeau spoil their perfect homestand, as they got the equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Michael Chaput dished a pass over to Zachary Evans-Renaud, who pounded a one-timer into the top-right corner of the net with 48 seconds remaining. Kirill Kabanov also picked up an assist on the goal, giving him his first point as a member of the MAINEiacs.
Feeling the momentum from the tying goal, the MAINEiacs took care of business in overtime. Jess Tanguy spotted Etienne Brodeur ahead of the pack, and sent him away on a breakaway. After a few stickhandles, Brodeur put one through Alain-Rajotte's legs, leading his team to victory. The goal was Brodeur's CHL-leading 21st of the season.
Antoine Bibeau made his first career start in the QMJHL, and earned the win, making 26 saves on 28 shots for Lewiston. Alexandre Alain-Rajotte suffered the overtime loss for Baie-Comeau, despite stopping 28 of the 31 shots he faced.
The MAINEiacs will now play three games on the road, beginning at 7:00 on Friday night against the Quebec Remparts. Lewiston's next home game takes place on November 24th, when the Chicoutimi Sagueneens visit the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
