Pittsfield Suns News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA (July 12, 2015) - The Pittsfield Suns lost to the Brockton Rox 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Wahconah Park. The Suns scored four runs, but Brockton was able to rally for two runs in the ninth inning to take home the win.
The Suns were on the board first, plating a run in the second inning. Three singles by Derek Gardella, Brendan Geary and Jordan Pallazola loaded the bases for Josh Hassell who hit a ground ball to second base, allowing the run to score from third to give the Suns a 1-0 advantage.
Brockton's Austin Filiere led off the fourth inning with a double and came around to score on a single by Tommy Marcinczyk, to even the score 1-1, but the score wouldn't be even for long, as the Rox would plate one in the fifth. Two back-to-back walks to Shane Adams and Kyle Carruther and a double steal put both runners in scoring position. Matt Dauby then singled to plate Brockton's second run of the game.
Pittsfield's bats came back to life in the bottom of the frame, as they scored three runs to take back the lead. Pallazola led off the inning with a single and would be standing on third with one out after a single by Hassell and a ground ball from Tyler Lyne. With runners on the corners Jeremy Giles walked to load the bases. Ryan Olmo hit a sacrifice fly, allowing two runners to score after an error by the Rox' center fielder. Giles would then score from second after Brockton's shortstop airmailed a ball over the first baseman's head, giving the Suns a 4-2 lead.
The Rox kept it close and crept closer to the Suns, adding one run in the eighth. Filiere led off the inning with a triple and would come around to score after a groundball to second, to cut the lead to 4-3.
Brockton would complete the rally in the ninth inning, stringing together two singles from Hayden Steele and Adams before Dauby doubled them home and sealed score 5-4.
Blake Oyler was awarded the win for the Rox, after coming in for starter Zack Kirby in the sixth inning. Kirby gave up six hits, two earned runs, a walk and struck out five in five innings of work. Suns reliever Dom Grillo was pegged with the loss.
The Suns return to Wahconah this Tuesday, July 14 for a 7 PM contest versus the league leading Seacoast Mavericks. It's Woof at Wahconah and fans are invited to bring their dogs to the game. Gates will open at 6 PM. For tickets please call (413)445-SUNS or visit pittsfieldsuns.com.Â
