Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats followed up the big trade earlier Monday with another trade sending INF Ryan Brockett to the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League in exchange for rookie INF Spencer Mahoney. The move wrapped up a busy day where the RailCats moved four players in all and removing one of the final two pieces of the 2013 Championship team in the Brockett deal.
Ryan Brockett appeared in 74 games with the team this season, after playing in only 45 games last season due to injury. Leading the team in hitting for a large portion of the season, Brockett posted a .272 average with 23 RBI in a RailCats uniform. The Guilford, Conn., native hit .245 with 21 RBI and hit his first two professional homeruns in 2014. He was acquired on July 17th of 2013 from the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League for future considerations and went 20 for 55 in 22 games with the RailCats for a .364 average in 2013.
This trade marks a return to Schaumburg for Brockett, who played in five games for the Boomers in 2013 going 6 for 18. In 2012 he played in the Can-Am League playing in 66 games for the Worcester Tornadoes. Brockett played collegiately at the University of New Haven.
The Cats acquired INF Spencer Mahoney, who played his college baseball just down the road from the South Shore at Valparaiso University. Mahoney hit .295 in 53 games as a senior at "Valpo" with three home runs and 28 RBI. For his college career the LaGrange, Illinois native played in 193 games with four career home runs and 83 RBI. Mahoney stole 22 bases over his four seasons in school and swiped nine in 2015. Mahoney played in five games with the Boomers going 3 for 12 with a double and a pair of RBI this season.
The RailCats return to action on Tuesday night to face the Joplin Blasters in the visitors first ever trip to US Steel Yard in a three game set. It is also a key series in the American Association Wild Card standings. The RailCats are 5.5 games behind Joplin with four games on the horizon against the Blasters. The upcoming series with Joplin will also include the completion of a suspended game from August 4th with the RailCats leading 2-0. That game began in Joplin and will be completed August 18th at 5:00pm prior to the regular series opener at 7:10pm.
