May 27, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release
The Arena Football League today announced that Dallas Desperados lineman Tom Briggs has been selected the league's Lineman of the Year. The honor marks the first time in Briggs' seven-year indoor career that he has been selected Lineman of the Year despite being a finalist on three occasions. It also marks the first time a Desperado has earned this honor.
Briggs, who earned All-Arena first-team and All-Ironman honors last week and is a candidate for Ironman of the Year, put together a career-year in 2003, finishing the season with a league- and career-high 10.5 sacks, a career-high 43.5 tackles, a career-high four forced fumbles, a career-high eight quarterback pressures and a career-high tying three tackles for losses. He also added nine passes defensed and a game-turning fumble recovery at Grand Rapids.
Not to be limited to the defensive side of the ball, Briggs also caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown. His work on the offensive line helped QB Jim Kubiak establish new league records for passing yards (4,762) and completion percentage (69.7) while leading the Dallas offense to a league-best 300.4 yards-per-game. Briggs' steady play throughout the season earned him Ironman of the Game honors following games against Chicago (2/9) and at Grand Rapids (5/18).
