Brigade\'s Holmes Wrestles to Honors

(Rochester, NY)- This weekend Rochester Brigade FB/LB Sinque Holmes of Newport News Apprentice College will be honored as the â2001 Most Outstanding Male Athlete, Virginia Colleges,' voted by the Peninsula Sports Club for his wrestling achievements this past fall.
"I'm very honored...this award means a lot to me and it took a lot of hard work to achieve," stated Holmes. "I want to thank my parents, the Apprentice school coaching staff and God."
The award is given to athletes from the peninsula area of Virginia, who attended college in that region. The recipient of the award is determined by a vote among the sports information directors from those schools.
This past fall Holmes achieved numerous titles including the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) heavyweight champion, NCWA Northeast Regional champion and the Builders Invitational champion. He ended the season 27-5, including wins in his last ten matches and 13 of his last 14. Holmes finished fourth in the Virginia State Division I Championships after losing to the eventual champion. Holmes also won the 1999 NCWA heavyweight title.
Past winners of the award include Atlanta Falcons first round pick, quarterback Michael Vick from Virginia Tech, who won the honor in 2000.
The Brigade heads on the road this week to face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers on Saturday, June 1, to kick off a series of three away games. The Brigade will return home on Thursday, June 20, to continue the Battle of I-90 as they face the Albany Conquest for the final time during the regular season with a 7:30 PM kickoff.
