Rochester Brigade News Release
(Rochester, NY)-The Rochester Brigade (6-8) fell to the Roanoke Steam (7-7) 33 to 20 in a defensive battle. With the loss, the Brigade maintains a one game lead over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers and a one and a half game lead over the New Haven Ninjas in the Northeast Division.
The Brigade was unable to muster any kind of an offensive attack, as they were stopped on seven of their nine possessions; fumbling the ball away twice, throwing two interceptions, allowing two missed field goals to be returned and turning the ball over on downs once. The Brigade's lack of offense led to four Steam touchdowns and one field goal.
The Steam's defensive line played excellent as they applied constant pressure to QB Matt D'Orazio and QB Jason Visconti, sacking them for a combined seven times, the most the Brigade has given up the entire season. D'Orazio completed 15 of 26 passes for 140 yards with one interception and two touchdowns before being relieved by backup Visconti.
The Brigade defense played well, creating five stops of their own to recover two fumbles, one of which was recovered by FB/LB LaMonte Coleman for a one yard score. Coleman also registered four sacks on the night. Leading the defensive charge were OL/DL and OL/DL Anthony; Dingle tallying three solo tackles and two sacks on the night and Cleary registering four solo tackles and a sack.
The leading receiver in the game was WR/DB Derek Baker with seven catches for 97 yards and one touchdown. Baker also registered six solo tackles and returned two kickoffs for 25 yards. OS Martino Theus left the game early in the third quarter with six catches for 48 yards and a score. That gives him 141 on the season just seven shy of the league record (148).
The MVP of the game was Steam QB Shawn Petterson, who completed 19 of 29 passes for 215 yards and three scores. The Game IRONMAN went to Steam WR/DB Mario Kelso with six catches for 89 yards, two solo tackles and an interception return for 39 yards late in the game to preserve the Steam's victory. The ADT Defensive Player of the game was named to newcomer DS Richard Holland, who played the beginning of the season with the Richmond Speed. Holland registered eight solo tackles and a breakup.
Next week the Brigade will have some time to think about the remainder of the season, as they embark on a bye week before returning to action on Friday, July 19, when they travel to Connecticut to face the Mohegan Wolves.
