Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (13-25) fell to the York Revolution (24-15) 9-7 Tuesday night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in the first of a three game mid-week series between the two teams. The loss snaps a two game win streak for the 'Fish, and gives them their fifth defeat against the Revolution this season. York picked up their third straight win, and have now eight of their last 10 last 20 of their last 28 games played.
Bridgeport's Jimmy Patterson registered a no-decision, lasting six innings on the mound, allowing two earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out a season-high five batters while surrendering a home run. Following two and one third innings of relief from the Bluefish, Eric Niesen (0-2) was tagged with the loss, blowing the save after letting up a game-winning three run homerun in two-thirds of an inning on the mound. York's starter James Simmons did not factor into the outcome of the game, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in seven innings on the mound, striking out four and allowing three free passes. Beau Vaughan (1-1) earned his first win of the season after pitching a scoreless inning in relief, allowing one hit. Mike DeMark earned up his league-leading 13th save of the season, retiring all three batters he faced striking out a pair.
The Bluefish kicked things of immediately, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 edge. The rally was highlighted by a Jonathan Galvez single with two outs that sent home Dan Johnson and Luis Rodriguez as Bridgeport sent eight batters to the plate. The Revolution would climb into the game over the next two innings, completing a 4-6-3 double play to retire the side in the bottom of the second, and then putting up two runs of their own in the top of the third to cut Bridgeport's lead in half after three innings of play at 4-2. The scoring came after leadoff hitter Alfredo Marte launched a two run shot to left field with two outs, giving him his first big fly of the season in his fourth game appearance for York.
The Bluefish would add insurance runs as the game went on, first in the bottom of the six, loading up the bases with back-to-back walks, and sending Johnson home for the second time off a sacrifice fly by Rossmel Perez. The bottom of the seventh inning brought two more runs in for the 'Fish, as Jose Cuevas singled to make the score 7-2.The ninth inning would prove to be monumental for the Revolution, who put up seven runs in the top half to take the lead and give the game its ending score of 9-7. The inning included York sending 10 batters to the plate, and was highlighted by Bryan Pounds' fourth home run of the season, a three run blast to left which sealed the deal for the team currently with the best record in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Luiz Hernandez led the offensive efforts for Bridgeport, posting his second four hit game of the season in five at-bats, crossing the plate twice. Photo provided courtesy of Dave Csordas.
