Bridgeport Bluefish Fall to Atlantic City, 3-2, in 11 Innings

(Bridgeport, Conn., May 8, 2003) – The Bridgeport Bluefish fell to the Atlantic City Surf, 3-2, in eleven innings before 1,771 fans on Thursday evening at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Atlantic City scored the game-winning run in the 11th inning on a RBI-single to shallow right field from Jimmy Gonzalez, scoring Trey Beamon (2-for-3) from third base. Beamon was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second and third to set up the winning hit.

Bridgeport failed to tie the game in their home half of the 10th inning after getting a runner to third base with one out. Hector Kuilan (3-for-4) led off the home half of the 11th inning with a lead-off double. Angel Espada pinch ran for Kuilan and moved over to third on a sacrifice by Richard Almanzar. Espada was stranded on third after strikeouts by Wellington Sanchez and Ben Candelaria.

Bluefish reliever Keith Davis (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in two innings (1BB, 1K). Travis Thompson (1-0) picked up the win for the Surf (1.0 IP, 1BB) while Randi Mallard earned his second save of the season after tossing a scoreless 11th inning . Bridgeport starter Angel Miranda did not factor into the decision despite allowing just one run on three hits in seven inning (1BB, 4K). Atlantic City's Andy High also was not involved in the decision after going 5.1 innings while giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits (2BB, 2K).

The Bluefish grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI-double from Kuilan, scoring Cesar Devarez all the way from first base. Devarez reached on a fielder's choice after Willis Otanez reached base on an error by Atlantic City third baseman Kim Batiste. Atlantic City knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Chad Gambill, scoring Ric Johnson. Johnson led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Beamon and reached third on a ground out by Gonzalez.

Bridgeport went ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning on a Devarez RBI-single. Willis Otanez scored that run after doubling to left field. However, Atlantic City responded by tying the game in the eighth inning on a two-out infield RBI-single from Johnson. His infield single glanced off of Bluefish pitcher T.J. Mathews and rolled in into the hole between first and second base, allowing Raul Marval (2-for-5) to score all the way from second base. Marval had led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a ground out from Pete Maestrales.

The Bluefish will resume play on Friday at 6:35 p.m. for the first fireworks night of the season in what will be the first of three games against the visiting Camden Riversharks. RHP Masaru Imazeki (0-0, 3.18) will take the mound for Bridgeport while opposing Camden's RHP Mark Nussbeck (0-0, 1.80).
