Pennsylvania Makes it Two in a Row over Somerset

Bridgewater, NJ - The Pennsylvania Road Warriors defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-7 in front of 3,042 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Emiliano Escandon reached base and moved to second on an error by Elio Ayala. Center fielder Michael Warner hit an infield single to second to move Escandon to third base. Left fielder Melvin Nieves grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Escandon to score.

Pennsylvania came back to tie the game with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Shortstop Gustavo Escobar struck out but reached first on a wild pitch. Right fielder Isasis Nunez singled and Escobar advanced to third on a fly out by left fielder Jerry Amador. Following a strike out by catcher Mike Lopez Cao, a double steal allowed Escobar to steal home to make the score 1-1.

The Road Warriors added five more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two run single by Escobar and a three run home run by Nunez (2) that put the Road Warriors up by five runs.

Somerset answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Catcher Tom McGee reached on an error by the first baseman and moved to second when right fielder Marcus Knight drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a balk by Pennsylvania starter Brad Whitworth and McGee came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Escandon. Warner followed with an RBI single and scored on a double by Nieves to cut the lead to 6-4.

Pennsylvania added a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Pena and again in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Amador that made the score 8-4. Somerset scored two runs with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth inning that was highlighted by RBI singles by Warner and Nieves.

Pennsylvania increased the lead with a sacrifice fly by Amador in the top of the ninth inning. Somerset added a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Knight to make the score 9-7.

Pennsylvania reliever Melvin Pizzarro (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Patriots starter Brett Jodie (0-1 ) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits and ten strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Pennsylvania reliever Greg Runser earned the save (1).

The Somerset Patriots 2003 Season presented by Ford will continue with a three game home series against future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson and the Newark Bears beginning on Friday at 7:05 pm.
