Breakers Tie Flash, Extend Unbeaten Streak to Five

The Boston Breakers (4-5-4) got a pair of goals Sunday night from Kelley O'Hara to extend their unbeaten streak to five games in a 2-2 tie with the Western New York Flash.

In front of 6,222 fans, Boston's largest home crowd of the season, the Breakers got on the board first. It came in the 20th minute when Meghan Klingenberg kept a ball in the final third on a heads-up play on attempted clearance by the Flash. Klingenberg's header went to Katie Schoepfer, who pushed a great through ball into the box. The well-placed pass went to O'Hara, and the second-year forward out of Stanford University took the pass and beat Flash keeper Ashlyn Harris to give Boston the lead.

The Flash tied the game in the 38th minute off a goal from Brazilian international Marta. She hit a low-driven shot that beat Boston keeper Alyssa Naeher far post.

The Breakers regained the lead in the 84th minute. O'Hara scored on a give-and-go with second-half substitute Claire Zimmeck. The play started when Alex Scott fed a pass to the newest Breaker, Nikki Marshall. Marshall took the ball from the top of the box out wide to the left of Harris. She then crossed the ball from the right wing into O'Hara, who one-touched it to Zimmeck before getting the ball right back at her feet. O'Hara ripped a shot past Harris to make it a 2-1 game. But the Flash equalized in the 87th minute when Alex Morgan flicked the ball off the outside of her left foot and into the goal.

"It wasn't really a game lost, but more like a point gained," Scott said. "We scored two great goals, but we have to learn how to keep hold of that lead and defend. The goal happened with only six minutes left, which is the real disappointment. But you know, we have to take positives from that game. We played against a great team and a great attacking lineup, and now we see what we need to improve."

Prior to Sunday's match, the 13 World Cup players between the two teams combined were honored on the field during a pre-game ceremony led by WPS Chief Executive Officer Anne-Marie Eileraas. The Breakers players recognized were: Rachel Buehler, Lauren Cheney, Stephanie Cox, Amy LePeilbet, and Kelley O'Hara from the U.S.; Alex Scott and Kelly Smith from England; and World Cup champion Aya Sameshima from Japan. The Flash players recognized were Alex Morgan (U.S.), Ali Riley (New Zealand), Marta (Brazil), Christine Sinclair (Canada), and Candace Chapman (Canada).

It was also Boston's Project Pink Night. Breakers players' jerseys were auctioned off during the game, and in the end, more than $9,000 was raised for the Boston chapter of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
