CARY, NORTH CAROLINA (Sat., April 19, 2003) - Three different Boston Breakers scored goals in the locals second road win of the season in a 3-1 victory over the reigning WUSA champion Carolina Courage last night at SAS Stadium in Cary, North Carolina. The Breakers improve to 2-1-0, while the Courage are now 0-2-0.
Though it is early in the season, this match was a big game for the Breakers.. Boston needed to rebound after suffering a tough loss to Atlanta (6-0) last week. This victory is the final match of Boston's three-game road trip. It is also the first time since 2001 that the Breakers won two road games.
The Breakers will host their home opener at Nickerson Field on Saturday, April 26 against the Philadelphia Charge (7 p.m.).
"We got three points and that is very important,'' said Boston coach Pia Sundhage. "They worked hard and played with a lot of heart.''
Maren Meinert, Monica Gonzalez and Dagny Mellgren all scored for Boston, while Birgit Prinz scored a late second half goal for Carolina.
Meinert, the Breakers 2002 leader in points scored (30), put Boston up 1-0 just six minutes into the match. Meinert curled a corner kick into the far post by Carolina goalkeeper Maite Zabala. It was Meinert's second goal of the season.
The Breakers went up 2-0 in the 22nd minute on a scramble in front of Zabala.. Meinert picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and sent it over to Monica Gonzalez, who placed it in the back of the goal for her first career goal. With a goal and an assist, Meinert now has 12 career multiple-point games. She now has two goals and two assists for six points this season.
Breakers forward Dagny Mellgren gave the Breakers a 3-0 lead when she scored in the 73rd minute. Mellgren scored her second goal of the season when she latched onto a through ball from Kristine Lilly. It was Lilly's second assist of the year.
Carolina cut into the lead a minute later when forward Birgit Prinz broke through the tough Breakers defense a minute after Mellgren's goal. It was the German National Team forward's second goal of the season.
