Boston Breakers News Release

The Boston Breakers look to extend their winning streak to three when they take on the Atlanta Beat at Harvard Stadium on Wednesday, August 4 at 7 p.m.

This will only be the second meeting between the Breakers and the 2010 WPS expansion franchise. The Breakers defeated the Beat 3-1 on July 11th thanks to a second half outburst that saw the Breakers score three goals in a five-minute span.

This time, both teams will have back players that missed the July 11th match due to National Team duty. Boston was missing four starters: Lauren Cheney, Stephanie Cox, Amy LePeilbet and Kristine Lilly. Atlanta played without WPS All-Star goalkeeper Hope Solo, midfielder Lori Chalupny, and Swiss forward Ramona Bachmann. Defender Kia McNeil also missed that match having received a red card the week prior.

Boston has won five of their previous six games, thanks to a rejuvenated offense that has produced 14 goals in that time. Rookie Jordan Angeli and team scoring leader Kelly Smith have fueled the Breakers' recent success, combining for seven goals in the last five matches. During the hot streak, Boston has climbed the ranks from sixth to third place in the WPS standings.

After a rough start to their debut season, the Beat are currently one of the hottest teams in the WPS, along with the Breakers. Since their loss to Boston, the Beat are undefeated, posting a 3-0-1 record during that time.

Breakers Rookies Power 3-1 Victory Over Freedom

Sporting pink jerseys in support of breast cancer, the Boston Breakers defeated the Washington Freedom 3-1 on Saturday at Harvard Stadium at 6 p.m.

The match closed out the four game series between the two teams 3-0-1 in Boston's favor. Washington is one of three WPS franchises that have not beaten the Breakers in 2010.

Getting on the board first, Boston netted the lone goal of the first half when Jordan Angeli headed a free kick towards the goal, and Kelly Smith ran onto the back post to tap it in. This was Smith's seventh goal of the season and third in two games. She now sits tied for fourth in the league for goals.

Then in the 56th minute, rookie Angeli shined again when she received a ball from Lauren Cheney in the box, and scored her fifth WPS-career goal, her fourth in five games, putting the Breakers up 2-0.

However, it wasn't long before Washington's fierce attacker Abby Wambach lessened the gap by heading the ball over goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher in the 67th minute.

Boston's solid back line prevented the Freedom from scoring the equalizer, and Cheney solidified the win in the 85th minute when she connected on a ball from Amy LePeilbet for her third goal of 2010. This was also LePeilbet's first WPS-career assist.

The pink jerseys, which were part of PUMA's Project Pink initiative to raise funds for breast cancer were auctioned off at Saturday's game. Blank was raised and 100% of the proceeds went to Boston's Chapter of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Sporting hot pink jerseys Breakers rookies Jordan Angeli and Lauren Cheney led the Boston Breakers to a 3-1 win over the Washington Freedom on Saturday at Harvard Stadium.

The Breakers struck first when Angeli headed a free kick on goal and midfielder Kelly Smith caught up with it for a tap-in at the back post. For Smith, it was the seventh goal of the season and third in the past two matches.

Angeli struck again in the 56th minute, putting the Breakers up 2-0 off a feed from fellow 2010 Breakers draft pick Cheney. It was Angeli's 5th goal of the season. Remarkably, the Breakers young midfielder is now 7th in the WPS scoring charts despite playing only 768 of a possible 1,440 minutes this season. The Freedom's All-Star striker Abby Wambach closed the deficit to 2-1 in the 67th minute, heading the ball past Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher. But Boston's solid backline fended off the Freedom for the rest of the evening. Cheney sealed the victory in the 85th minute when she scored her third goal of the season off a feed from Amy LePeilbet. It was the first career WPS assist for LePeilbet, the 2009 WPS Defender-of-the-Year. The Breakers rookie scoring duo of Angeli and Cheney each ended up with one goal and one assist on the night.

The pink jerseys were provided by WPS sponsor PUMA through the Project Pink initiative to support the fight against breast cancer. Breakers fans raised over $7,000 by bidding on the game worn pink jerseys of their favorite players. All proceeds will be given to the Boston chapter of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The Breakers wish to thank PUMA, We Got Soccer who provided free screening of all the pink jerseys, and all of the Breakers fans who bid and who purchased Project Pink merchandise for their support in this worthy cause.
