
Breakers lose in New York

UNIONDALE, NEW YORK (May 10, 2003) - The Boston Breakers suffered a tough 3-2 loss tonight against New York on a late goal by Power midfielder Krista Davey.
Davey scored when a long ball raced by the Breakers defense. Davey outran a couple defenders to score the game-winning goal in the 89th minute. Last week, Davey scored the game-winner in the extra time against Philadelphia.
Boston tied the match at 2-2 when Maren Meinert scored on a beautiful shot to the right of New York goalkeeper Carly Smolak in the 86th minute. The play started when Kristine Lilly won the ball at midfield and fed Angela Hucles, who then sent a through ball to Meinert. It was Meinert second goal of the match and sixth of the season.
Boston's next game is on Sunday, May 18th against the San Diego Spirit at Torero Stadium (8 p.m.). The Breakers are now 3-2-1, while New York improves to 3-3-0.
The Breakers got on the board first as Meinert scored fifth goal of the season. Meinert settled a long ball from defender Kate Sobrero and chipped it by Power defender Shannon Boxx. Meinert touched the ball once and placed the ball Power goalkeeper Carly Smolak for a Breakers 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of play.
New York tied the game in the 50th minute. Tiffeny Milbrett took a pass down the left side from Boxx. Milbrett slid a ball into the box and Christie Welsh poked the ball in the near post by a diving Breakers goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. That is Welsh's fourth goal of the year.
New York went up 2-1 on an almost identical play from Boxx to Milbrett down the leftside. Milbrett broke away from the Breakers defender and slid the ball in the box for Joanne Peters to place into the near post for the lead in the 66th minute of the match.
Kristine Lilly had a chance to tie the match in the 76th minute when she blistered a cross from Erin O'Grady from 13 yards out. Lilly's shot was point blank and Smolak came up with the big save.
