Boston Breakers News Release

The Breakers take on the Atlanta Beat this Sunday at 6 p.m. at Harvard Stadium. This is the historic first meeting between these two clubs in WPS, although previous incarnations of these clubs faced each other in the WUSA from 2001 to 2003. Atlanta currently sits in last place in WPS with a 1-6-3 record. The Breakers are in sixth place with a record of 2-5-4.

The Breakers are coming off of a hard fought 2-1 win over the 2nd place Philadelphia Independence on July 4th. Taking the pitch in the second half down 1-0, Lauren Cheney quickly put Boston back in the game with a goal in the 46th minute. Then, breaking the tie with just four minutes left to play, Kristine Lilly received a cross from Kelly Smith and put it away for the game winner.

Lilly's goal snapped a nine game victory drought for Boston, who hadn't won since the season opener against the Washington Freedom. The Breakers will be pushing for their first win in front of their own fans in 2010, as both victories this season have occurred on the road.

The struggling beat have recently re-tooled their roster, signing a group of former Saint Louis Athletica stars, including U.S. Women's National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo, along with English National Team forward Eniola Aluko, midfielders Lori Chalupny and Aya Miyama, and defender Tina Ellertson.

Both teams will be missing key players due to the U.S. National Team's match against Sweden. Boston will be without Lilly, Cheney, and defenders Stephanie Cox and Amy LePeilbet. Atlanta will be without their star keeper Solo, Chalupny, and forward Ramona Bachmann. Defender Kia McNeil will also be sitting out for Atlanta after receiving a red card in last weekend's game.

The first 500 fans into the stadium will receive a free Fabiana trading card presented by Stonyfield Farm. Fans are also encouraged to join Marcus Santos and AfroBrazil, the official house band of the Breakers, for "Beat the Drum Night". Bring your drum to the pre-game drum circle at 5 p.m. at Harvard Stadium. Participants will be invited to parade across the field with the band during the pregame ceremonies and join them to drum in the stands all game long. All drum circle participants will receive a free ticket to the game from Marcus after his pre-game drum lesson.

Breakers Announce Foxwoods as Jersey Sponsor

Fans attending this Sunday's home match will notice something different about the Breakers home uniforms. On Thursday, July 1st, the Breakers introduced Foxwoods as the team's official jersey sponsor, a landmark achievement for the two-year old soccer franchise. The Breakers donned the Foxwoods name for the first time on July 4th, rallying to a 2-1 victory on the road over the Philadelphia Independence.

"This is a milestone for the Breakers and for all of women's professional soccer. We are excited to be partnering with one of the world's premier resorts," said General Manager Andy Crossley. "Foxwoods is an incredible brand, one that we hope to grow even bigger through exposure to our diverse fan base."

"Foxwoods is thrilled to partner with New England's premier women's professional soccer team," said Robert Victoria, Chief Marketing Officer for Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprises. "The Breakers have a passionate and loyal fan base and a team of world-class players, including Connecticut's own Kristine Lilly. This agreement provides us with a great way extend our brand in the New England marketplace in a compelling way and we're looking forward to working together with the team on a number of innovative community initiatives and events."

Donate Your Soccer Gear to Kids in Africa

The Breakers are teaming up with the Atlanta Beat Soccer Foundation to participate in the "Donate Your Gear" program which donates gently used soccer gear to the schools of Niger, Africa.

Fans can bring new or used equipment and soccer apparel to the Breakers home game this Sunday, July 11 when Boston faces the Beat at 6 p.m. Drop boxes will be located in the Fan Zone next to the stadium from 4-6 p.m.
