Breakers Add Gold Medalist To Roster In WPS Disperal Draft
This afternoon the Boston Breakers drafted U.S. Women's National Team defender and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Stephanie Cox in the Women's Professional Soccer Dispersal Draft. The dispersal draft was necessary after WPS announced the Los Angeles Sol would discontinue operations last week, when the team was unable to attain new ownership.
The Sol's previous owner, AEG gave back its stake in the team last November. The league had interest from new ownership, but the plans fell through at the last minute. The remaining 19 players whose rights were previously held by the Los Angles Sol were dispersed among the eight WPS teams.
With a vacant left back position, the Breakers selected Cox in the first round as the fifth overall selection.
In the second round of the draft, the Breakers attained the rights to University of Portland forward Michelle Enyeart. She was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Sol with the third pick in the second round (14th overall) of the 2010 WPS Draft held January 15, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pa.
"Cox is a world-class defender and one of the most experienced backs in the world," said head coach Tony DiCicco. "She will be a good addition to the Breakers not just defensively, but also offensively."
Breakers Sign Two International Forwards
The Breakers bolstered their 2010 international signings with the announcement of Spanish forward Laura Del Rio and the re-signing of Brazilian forward Fabiana.
The Breakers agreed to terms with Del Rio after her negotiating rights were acquired from the Los Angeles Sol for a third round draft pick in the 2010 WPS Draft. Del Rio has made 30 appearances for the Spanish Women's National Team scoring 12 goals. The 27-year-old has spent this season playing for FFC Frankfurt in Germany's Frauen-Bundesliga league and for FC Indiana of the W-League in 2008 and 2009.
Fabiana will join the Breakers for the second season. The Brazilian National Team forward spent the first few months of the 2009 season rehabbing an ACL injury she suffered while playing for her club team in Brazil.
